As a fan who’s been through countless binge-watching sessions, I can confidently say that A Discovery of Witches is a truly enchanting series that deserves all the praise it’s getting. With just three seasons and episodes that don’t overstay their welcome, it’s the perfect escape for those who love a good fantasy tale.
As soon as AMC’s adaptation of “A Discovery of Witches” landed on Netflix, its popularity skyrocketed, a development that doesn’t come as a shock to me. With its captivating blend of fantasy elements and engaging storyline, it was destined for success. It’s truly delightful to witness such a series thrive. Furthermore, with only three seasons and episodes that aren’t overly lengthy, you can breeze through it in no time!
If you’ve made it to season 3, you may have observed a new face portraying Baldwin Montclair, Matthew Clairmont’s vampire brother. You might be wondering why Trystan Gravelle isn’t in the third season of A Discovery of Witches (ADOW). The reason boils down to scheduling issues that arose during filming.
Scheduling conflicts got in the way of Trystan Gravelle returning to A Discovery of Witches
According to the official Twitter page for “A Discovery of Witches,” they announced that when work on season 3 began, scheduling issues arose due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might recall that studios were forced to close in March 2020 and didn’t resume filming until September that year.
If you recognize Trystan Gravelle, it could be due to his role in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” where he portrays Pharazôn. Filming for ADOW season 3 started in September 2020, coincidentally around the same time that production on Rings of Power season 1 resumed after a pandemic-induced halt. Consequently, Gravelle couldn’t appear in season 3 of A Discovery of Witches because he was occupied with filming Rings of Power for Amazon Prime Video.
In a different role, the actor who stepped in is Peter McDonald. To be clear, I’m not implying any inferiority, but I missed the essence of Baldwin that Gravelle brought to the character. Nevertheless, it was great to see this change during the final season. The series found a way to make it work effectively. And we certainly can’t blame Gravelle for accepting another opportunity – such shifts are part of the showbiz world, regrettably. As they say, the show must keep moving forward! Notably, McDonald is recognized for his roles in Captain Jack, Woken, Mandy, and This Town.
All three seasons of A Discovery of Witches are now streaming on Netflix.
