Why Did Stuart Martin Leave Miss Scarlet and The Duke?

In a surprising turn for the beloved time-set mystery series “Miss Scarlet and The Duke,” leading actor Stuart Martin has chosen to step away from his role as the Duke following the conclusion of season 4 in February 2024. Despite this departure, the show was swiftly renewed for a fifth season. Fans were left wondering about the reasons behind Martin’s decision to leave the character he portrayed so compellingly.

Here’s what we know about why the Army of Thieves star left Miss Scarlet and The Duke.

Why Stuart Martin isn’t in Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 5

It’s said that Martin chose to leave the British-American drama, giving the showroom a chance to pursue fresh artistic paths.

Explaining his decision, Martin shared:

For four wonderful years, I’ve had the privilege of embodying Duke, a character breathtakingly crafted by Rachael’s exceptional writing. It was an indescribable pleasure. However, it seemed fitting for Scarlet to embark on fresh adventures and tackle new narratives as our show expands and transforms. This, according to The Direct, was his statement.

During a conversation with PBS’s Masterpiece Studio podcast, Martin openly discussed the challenges he faced when making his decision.

It was extremely challenging. There seemed to be something intriguing about him departing, as it allowed for a significant test, and we could witness Eliza and Duke reaching an unprecedented juncture that might not have occurred if the narrative had progressed as usual. Martin subtly suggested a potential future comeback, referring to his exit as ‘for now.’

As stated in an article from PBS, the character played by Martin, named William Wellington or The Duke, decides to embark on a fresh start in New York City, leaving behind his position at Scotland Yard.

As a result of this significant storyline shift, PBS has decided to rename the series “Miss Scarlet.” Additionally, they’ve announced that Tom Durant Pritchard will be joining the cast as Alexander Blake, a fresh character who teams up with Eliza Scarlet (portrayed by Kate Phillips) to investigate crimes in London.

The fifth season of Miss Scarlet premieres on January 12, 2025.
