As a seasoned gamer and coffee enthusiast who has gone through countless mugs over the years, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by Stanley‘s recall of 2 million travel mugs. I’ve had my fair share of mishaps with defective products in the past, and this seems like just another addition to the list.
Over two million units of a popular line of travel mugs produced by the well-known drinkware company, Stanley, are being pulled from the market after the company made the decision to recall them. Customers who own these travel mugs have been advised to stop using them immediately due to a defect that has been discovered. Let me explain why Stanley is recalling these travel mugs and what exactly is wrong with them.
Here’s why Stanley recalled 2 million travel mugs
“I was thrilled to learn that Stanley, my favorite brand, has taken action recently! They recalled approximately 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs from the market due to some issues. This decision affects all their current travel mugs available in the United States.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on their website that they were recalling the travel mugs manufactured by Stanley. In a press release, they pointed out a potential danger associated with these mugs: when exposed to heat and twisting motion, the threads on the lid could contract, leading to the lid coming off during use, posing a risk of burns.
The recall was carried out on December 12, 2024.
The press release’s description of the recalled mugs mentioned they came in multiple colors such as white, black, and green, available in sizes 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. Each had a polypropylene lid. Furthermore, the company supplying these travel mugs disclosed their recall identification numbers.
Stanley advises customers to apply for a new travel mug lid replacement and cease use until it’s swapped out, due to safety concerns regarding the current lids. The announcement further disclosed cases of lid-related injuries that have been reported. According to Stanley, 16 American customers experienced issues with their lids detaching, while 2 suffered burn injuries. Globally, Stanley has recorded a total of 91 incidents resulting in 38 burn injuries, with 11 needing medical attention.
