As a long-time fan of Richard Gere’s captivating performances, I must admit that his recent antics during the Today Show interview left me utterly puzzled and somewhat amused. While I’ve always admired his ability to portray complex characters with grace and finesse, it seems he may have momentarily lost himself in one of his roles – perhaps a rebellious agent from The Agency!
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “During my recent chat on The Today Show with Savannah Guthrie, I found myself in an unexpected situation where I gave her a gesture that caught many fans off guard. Now, folks are curious to know why I made such a move, and I guess we’ll find out soon enough!
Here’s everything you need to know about the incident.
Richard Gere flips off Savannah Guthrie during live interview
During a chat on The Today Show as he marketed his latest political thriller series, The Agency, Richard Gere seemingly flipped the bird to Savannah Guthrie. This action left her visibly surprised. Guthrie questioned him about it, saying, “What was that?” To which Gere responded, “I didn’t do an obscene gesture on this family-friendly morning show.” Although his gesture wasn’t clearly shown due to censorship.
After Julia Roberts, known for her role in Pretty Woman, quickly apologized, Guthrie responded with “I’m censoring you,” playfully obstructing Richard Gere’s hand gestures. Later, he explained that he had made that gesture from a clip of his show, the Today Show. The video stopped right before Gere displayed the middle finger. He further stated that the clip was incomplete and didn’t make sense without showing the part where he gave the middle finger.
Guthrie reminded Gere of Cher giving an “f-bomb” when she’d appeared on the show the previous day. Cher did an interview with host Hoda Kotb, where she opened up about her past troubled marriage with Sonny Bono and the advice comedian Lucille Ball had given her.
Afterward, Gere and Guthrie delved into the topic of The Agency series, whereupon Gere admitted he hadn’t watched any episodes yet. He went on to describe the show’s plotline and praised its talented ensemble cast.
On December 1, 2024, the much-anticipated series “The Agency” will make its debut on Showtime. Joining Michael Douglas (Gere), Michael Fassbender, Cynthia West, and Penelope Bonneville are an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, and John Magaro.
