At the 2025 Oscars, Morgan Freeman’s appearance on stage, where he introduced the “In Memoriam” segment, has left fans questioning why he was wearing a glove on his left hand. The renowned actor, known for his Academy Awards, emotionally paid tribute to his late colleague and friend Gene Hackman during the ceremony at the Dolby Theater. The moving segment also honored other industry greats who passed away the previous year, such as Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, and David Lynch, among others.

What happened to Morgan Freeman’s hand?
Morgan Freeman, having sustained permanent nerve damage from a car accident in 2008, often dons a glove on his left hand as a result.
On August 3, 2008, an unfortunate car accident almost took the life of Freeman. He was behind the wheel of a 1997 Nissan Maxima, which belonged to Demarius Meyer, his companion at the time. The incident happened in the evening close to Ruleville, Mississippi. The car flipped over, causing severe injuries to both Freeman and Meyer. According to Reuters, after the crash, Freeman had to stay in the hospital for four days due to a broken arm and elbow.
Apart from the news report, In addition to this, he had a surgery lasting approximately 4.5 hours to rejoin his nerves and mend the harm done to his left arm due to an accident. This incident led Freeman to live with fibromyalgia, necessitating him to wear a compressive glove for better blood flow support. Following the accident, Meyer accused Freeman of driving while intoxicated in a lawsuit. The lawsuit’s details about the settlement amount were kept confidential after both parties reached an agreement.
In addition to using the glove during public events, Freeman has also donned it while performing acting roles. Notably, he’s been seen sporting a compression glove on his left hand in many of his latest screen performances. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed this medical accessory on Freeman in his recent character portrayal of Edwin Mullins in Taylor Sheridan’s series Lioness.
