Why Did Michelle Obama Defend Simone Biles? Marlon Humphrey Controversy Explained

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen plenty of drama unfold within gaming communities – and let me tell you, this Olympic gymnastics debacle is giving some of those epic rants a run for their money!

As a fervent admirer, I’m expressing my solidarity with the extraordinary gymnast, Simone Biles, who has earned my utmost respect. In response to recent events, I feel compelled to voice my sentiments. The commotion stems from NFL cornerback Marlon Humphrey‘s criticizing Biles for showing respect to Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade on the podium by bowing. To set the record straight, here’s a clarification of my stance on Simone Biles and its connection to Humphrey’s comments:

What did Michelle Obama say about Simone Biles?

On August 6, Michelle Obama shared a touching post on Facebook, accompanied by a photo of Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles respectfully acknowledging Rebeca Andrade. Here’s the caption she used:

“I’m still deeply moved by that stunning display of sisterhood and sportsmanship! The affection emanating from these incredible women is palpable. Huge congratulations to Rebecca, Jordan, and Simone!”

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about Rebecca Andrade’s historical victory in the floor exercise apparatus final on Monday, August 5! While Simone Biles faced some unexpected challenges with a few uncommon mistakes and potential aggravation of a calf injury by stepping out of bounds, it was Chiles who claimed the bronze medal following a review by the judges that boosted her score to third place. Despite their own struggles, both Biles and Chiles graciously acknowledged Andrade’s incredible achievement as she earned her very first gold medal in gymnastics. What an inspiring moment for us all!

Michelle Obama’s comment was shared a day after Marlon Humphrey criticized Simone Biles and Suni Lee for their gesture, calling it “completely disgusting.” The post, viewed by over 8 million people, has received significant backlash from fans. Many argue that Andrade, who had three ACL injuries before winning the gold medal, displayed great sportsmanship in the photo with Biles and Lee.

Humphrey admitted in a later post on X that he was “lowkey getting cooked” by comments and was “getting cussed out in Brazilian on Instagram.” To little surprise, he was then called out for not knowing that the language Brazilians speak is Portuguese, not “Brazilian.”
