As a devoted fan who has journeyed with the SWAT team since its inception, I must say it’s bittersweet to see Lina Esco bid adieu to her character Christina Alonso. Having been a part of this dynamic squad since the very first season, Officer Chris was not just a character on my screen but a fellow comrade who braved each mission with unwavering courage and determination.
SWAT’s eighth season is causing a buzz online with its fresh episodes, as it rekindles anticipation among viewers for the possible comeback of Lina Esco’s character, Christina Alonso. The squad has undergone quite a transformation since her departure, and fans can hardly wait to see her again, but even more so, they are curious to find out why Esco’s character Chris decided to leave.
Let’s explore the details behind Christina Alonso’s departure from SWAT, the reasons for it, and if there’s a chance she could return for Season 8.
Why did Lina Esco leave SWAT?
Actress Shemarda Wright, known for portraying Officer Christina “Chris” Alonso since the initial season of S.W.A.T. in 2017, has decided to leave the show following the conclusion of season five, in order to focus on other projects.
In the news, Esco gained attention as the first woman on the LAPD SWAT team. After serving with the K-9 Platoon, she joined this elite squad. When Season 5’s final episode aired, Esco announced via her Instagram account on May 23, 2024, that she was leaving. In her post, she shared her ambition to explore new creative avenues and acknowledged that stepping out of her comfort zone was challenging but essential. She also thanked her fellow actors and the fans who made her journey unforgettable. (Paraphrased from The Direct)

What happened to Christina Alonso in SWAT?
Episode 20 in Season 5 of SWAT marked the end of Lina Esco’s time on the show.
In the final episode, Chris, her character, chooses to depart from the SWAT squad to seize a fresh chance. Instead, she assumes the role of overseeing a sanctuary for unregistered female immigrants, a position that was formerly held by Mama Pina, under Terri Hoyos.
Chris confides in Hondo, who urges her not to leave and celebrates the impressive legacy she built during her tenure with the team. Nevertheless, Chris stands firm in her decision to depart, as she moves forward. Later in the episode, Chris also reveals her upcoming departure to Alex, sharing that she only has two weeks left before leaving the team.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, it seems like there’s a pretty low chance of Chris showing up for Season 8, given all that’s happened so far. Even Andy Dettman, the Executive Producer, hinted at some uncertainty about Lina’s return. He told TV Line he doesn’t know one way or another. But here’s the silver lining: if it makes sense and works out, it would be awesome to have everyone back for a reunion!
As a devoted fan, I’d like to encourage us all to remember our beloved character Chris by catching up on all the recent episodes of SWAT from Seasons 1 to 5, where she graced our screens. In the interim, let’s keep the momentum going by tuning in every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS for the latest episodes of Season 8. Don’t forget that these episodes will be available for streaming on Paramount+ the very next day!
