Who plays Eugene in The Last of Us Season 2 and why did Joel kill him?
In the sixth episode of The Last of Us Season 2, we meet Eugene for the first time officially. This character is skillfully played by experienced actor Joe Pantoliano.
Prior to this flashback sequence, the series had briefly mentioned Eugene as Gail’s deceased husband without providing much information about his demise. In the most recent episode, we discover that Joel leads Ellie on her inaugural patrol, a significant milestone marking her 19th birthday.
The regular excursion of Eugene and his companion, Adam, takes an unexpected turn as they get a distress signal. Suddenly, they find themselves facing an assault from the infected.
Upon Joel and Ellie’s arrival, I find Adam lifeless. Eugene, my companion, has been bitten, but as of yet, there are no visible signs of infection. He assures Ellie that he’ll accompany Eugene while she fetches the horses. However, Joel guides Eugene towards a cliff and ends his life, explaining his actions as, “If you truly care for someone, you can never forget their image.
The revelation that Joel deceives Gail, feigning Eugene’s suicide and inventing farewell statements, leaves a lasting impact on Ellie, as she had been suspicious of him following Salt Lake City’s disclosure. This situation only worsens the already strained relationship between them. When Ellie eventually uncovers the truth, Gail responds with a physical confrontation, significantly changing their interactions moving forward.
