His character has been a cornerstone of the show since its early days, and his absence is certainly felt. However, I understand and appreciate the reasons behind his decision to leave.

The long-running American police drama series “Chicago PD” has built a dedicated fanbase through its captivating storyline over the years. One reason for its popularity is the well-developed characters, providing a heartfelt perspective into the lives of authentic police officers. Notably, Jesse Lee Soffer skillfully played Intelligence Unit detective Jay Halstead. Regrettably, despite his impressive tenure, Soffer’s character parted ways with the series in 2022, leaving fans feeling disappointed. But, what caused Jesse Lee Soffer’s character Jay Halstead to exit Chicago PD?

Here are all the details regarding the seasoned actor’s exit from the American series.

When and why did Jesse Lee Soffer’s Jay Halstead leave Chicago PD?

Jesse Lee Soffer first appeared as Jay Halstead on Chicago PD back in 2014. However, he departed from the series during its tenth season, which aired in 2022.

In the third episode of Season 10, Halstead left the award-nominated series following an emotional revelation. While not on duty, he was involved in a robbery investigation which led to a confrontation with one of the suspects. In a split second of self-defense, the experienced officer ended up stabbing the thief several times, ultimately causing his death.

As Hank Voight and Hailey Upton manage a cover-up for their colleague’s error, Halstead grapples with ethical doubts about his work. Consequently, he submits his resignation. However, he decides against leaving and instead opts to revisit his past decisions, eventually enlisting in the army for a second tour of duty, this time targeting drug cartels in Bolivia.

In an interview with NBC Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan explained why Halstead left Chicago PD. According to Sigan, they wanted the character to depart on his own accord. “His connection to the Army is a big part of who he is,” said Sigan. “His time with the rangers influenced him greatly, shaping his morals and values.” She added that it made sense for Halstead to return to this aspect of his life, seeking simplicity and a clear sense of right and wrong.

Currently, it’s unconfirmed if Jesse Lee Soffer will continue portraying Jay Halstead in upcoming seasons of Chicago PD.
