Why did Gregg Rolie leave the band Journey?

Gregg Rolie is often overlooked in the annals of rock music history, yet his talent has left an indelible mark. As the lead vocalist for Santana, he already ensconced himself in the hearts of listeners, a feat recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the band. However, Rolie chose to depart from Santana and establish another legendary group that he eventually parted ways with: Journey.

In 1973, Rolie, along with Neal Schon who used to play guitar for Santana, were among the original founders of the band Journey. Initially, they started out as a progressive and art-rock group, emphasizing their instrumental skills. However, commercially, they faced difficulties in finding their footing. To address this issue, another lead singer was added to the band beside Rolie. Eventually, Steve Perry joined the band, which significantly changed Journey into the popular rock band we mostly remember today. Rolie contributed to three albums with Perry before leaving the band in 1980.

The keyboard player and vocalist openly explained why he decided to leave the band, even though they went on to achieve significant commercial success afterwards. He pointed out that he grew tired of Journey’s extensive touring commitments and was discontented with his personal life as the new decade began.

In 2019, he shared with Rolling Stone that his departure was due to personal dissatisfaction with his own life path, not because of any issues with management, music, or their achievements. Contrary to popular belief, he emphasized that it wasn’t jealousy over Steve Perry’s success as the lead singer that prompted his exit.

To put it simply, Rolie admitted that Perry’s arrival made his life less complicated because everyone assumed it was due to Perry taking over the lead vocals. Overwhelmed with numerous keyboard parts and lead singing duties, I found Perry’s presence a relief. Moreover, he had an exceptional voice, making it a no-brainer for me. I never opposed the idea.

Rolie continues to release solo music

In a more relaxed rhythm, Rolie kept putting out music. He launched two solo records during the ’80s, and then teamed up with former Journey members Steve Smith and Ross Valory to establish the Storm in 1991. The band lasted for five years, producing a total of two albums.

Despite not officially reconciling with Journey, Gregg Rolie holds no grudges against the band. In an unusual accomplishment, he was inducted into the group as a member in 2017, making him one of only two musicians to receive this honor twice, leaving behind quite an impressive legacy.
