Why was Francis fired from Barstool?

Back in June 2019, the former author turned humorist posted a blog entry discussing the mysterious vanishing of Mackenzie Lueck, a student at a Utah university.

Following the disclosure of the case details, Ellis made derogatory comments about Lueck, implying she was doing well. He called her a “proud sugar baby,” based on news articles that mentioned she was registered on SeekingArrangement.com, a dating platform linking financially struggling younger individuals with wealthier older ones. Additionally, Ellis ridiculed Lueck’s social media popularity, characterizing her Instagram following as relatively small.

Sadly, mere hours after the blog was published, Lueck’s body was found, which prompted Barstool Sports founder David Portnoy to dismiss Ellis. In a since-removed video, Portnoy stated, “He posted it and took it down before I even knew about it, but the harm has been done. It’s not acceptable. Francis is skilled, and he’ll recover. I regret that we had to let him go, but we must.” As reported by Fox News.

In a public apology after being terminated, Francis Ellis admitted his error and acknowledged the severity of his judgment. He said, “Unfortunately, it wasn’t until several hours later that Mackenzie’s death was discovered, at which point I understood how terrible my decision had been.” Furthermore, he accepted full responsibility for his actions, stating, “Barstool Sports granted me freedom to post my content without supervision. Unfortunately, I misused this trust with my article. Consequently, David Portnoy terminated me today, and I believe he was right in doing so.
