Why did Chris Jasper leave the Isley Brothers?

Chris Jasper might not be a household name straightaway, but he was connected to the Isley Brothers through marriage – his sister wed founding member Rudolph Isley. Unlike the flamboyant image of guitarist Ernie Isley or vocalist Ronald Isley, Chris Jasper didn’t make use of their renowned name or adopt an attention-grabbing style.

Indeed, Jasper was the primary songwriter for the Isley Brothers during their musical heyday in the 1970s, a time marked by both critical acclaim and commercial success. It was during this period that he wrote some of their most iconic and enduring tunes, such as “Between the Sheets,” “For the Love of You,” and “Fight the Power.” Beyond his songwriting prowess, Jasper also skillfully played the keyboards.

In 1973, Jasper became a member of the Isley Brothers, significantly contributing to their rise as major players in funk and R&B music for the following ten years. However, by 1984, strife both financially and within the family reached its peak. Consequently, Jasper chose to leave along with some other band members, taking his skills elsewhere.

Chris Jasper left the Isley Brothers in 1984

In 1984, it was the keyboardist who initiated the formation of the band known as Isley-Jasper-Isley. The other two members, guitarist Ernie Isley and bassist Marvin Isley, represented by their surnames, were already part of this musical group. They made a powerful debut in 1985 with the hit single “Caravan of Love.” This track soared to the top of the Billboard R&B charts, demonstrating that Jasper could achieve success independently, without the traditional Isley Brothers branding.

Sadly, the group Isley-Jasper-Isley disbanded. They decided to part ways in 1987, following the release of their third album which was their least successful. Chris Jasper went on to produce solo music and never reconnected with the band that brought him fame.

In the early ’90s, I was thrilled to see my beloved Isley Brothers back together again after their mid-’80s rift. It was Ronald Isley and the other two members of Isley-Jasper-Isley who rejoined forces, and together they achieved a stunning comeback with their hit collaboration with R. Kelly titled “Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)”.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Though Chris Jasper might not receive as much recognition as the Isley Brothers in popular circles, those within the music industry appreciate his significant contributions to the band. In 2016, he was bestowed with the National R&B Society Lifetime Achievement Award, and four years later, he received the Soultracks Lifetime Achievement Award. The Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted Chris Jasper alongside the other Isley Brothers in 2022.

On February 23, 2025, our beloved keyboardist sadly passed away. Two months before his demise, he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite not touring together for several decades, The Isley Brothers paid tribute to Jasper in a statement they shared with Variety.

It was said he was an extraordinary musician, a poet with lyrics, an esteemed relative of the Isley clan, a trendsetter, and a crucial contributor to the sound that molded generations. Though our hearts are filled with sorrow, we are thankful for the moments, the music, and the memories we cherish together. His impact will continue to resonate eternally. May you find peace, dear brother.
