Why The Waterfront’s Bree really hates her brother Cane

As a gamer immersed in “The Waterfront,” I find myself empathizing with the Buckley family’s second generation – specifically, Bree and Cane. Our past is tangled, and it’s safe to say that I, as Bree, can’t seem to shake off the resentment I harbor towards Cane. The reason? During our custody battle for Diller Hopkins, his testimony worked against me, leading to my loss of him. That’s a wound that’s yet to heal.

Following an incident where Bree came close to causing a fire in her house, her ex-husband Rodney Hopkins petitioned for full custody of their son Diller Hopkins. To Bree’s surprise, Cane Buckley, played by Jake Weary, testified in court about Bree’s history with substance abuse and challenges maintaining sobriety.

For a considerable period, Bree found it difficult to pardon Cane because he had spoken the truth in court. However, it became apparent that Cane was acting with the well-being of Bree’s son in mind. Regrettably, Bree’s animosity towards Cane only served to bring more problems upon the Buckley family.

To prevent Harlan and Belle from being taken into custody, Bree devised a scheme involving Marcus, which included setting him up for blackmail using illegal substances. The substances were intended for a DEA agent who had previously struggled with addiction. However, things took an unexpected turn when Marcus accidentally overdosed on the drugs, leaving Bree no choice but to flee from the scene.

Actress Melissa Benoist, playing Bree on the show, discussed the complex backstory and development of her character in an interview for The Waterfront. Benoist expressed, “It’s always tough when a character doesn’t make choices that I personally approve of” (as reported by Netflix’s Tudum).

Regardless of her turbulent history, Bree demonstrates her strength and determination by making the right choices today. Benoist believes this is the quality that deserves her eventual forgiveness. “She’s determined to make amends for what she’s broken,” Benoist observed.
