Wondering What Led to Afton Williamson’s Departure from “The Rookie”?
Fans of the show are curious as to why Afton Williamson decided to part ways with “The Rookie” after Season 1. Her character, Talia Bishop, played a pivotal role in the series, and her departure left a noticeable void that deeply affected Nolan, who lost yet another ally. As a result, viewers are eager to understand what factors might have led the writers to let go of this cherished character.
Here’s everything we know about why Afton Williamson’s Talia Bishop left The Rookie.
Why was Afton Williamson’s Talia Bishop written out of The Rookie?
After expressing that she encountered “race-based bias, intimidation, and unwanted sexual advances,” Afton Williamson departed from The Rookie.
In the initial season of The Rookie, Talia Bishop was a significant character. However, after allegations surfaced, her role in the series was rewritten at the start of Season 2. Williamson announced her exit from the show on August 4, 2019, through an Instagram post. In a heartfelt message, she disclosed that she experienced unfair treatment and harassment from the hair department and top producers of the show.
I won’t be participating in Season 2 of The Rookie. I feel it’s important to be honest with my incredible fans. During the making of the pilot, I faced racial discrimination and inappropriate racially-charged comments from the hair department, as well as bullying from the executive producers. Throughout the season, these issues persisted, along with sexual harassment from a recurring guest star, Demetrius Grosse. The head of the hair department, Sally Ciganovich, continued her racist commentary and bullying, which escalated into sexual assault at our wrap party.
In other words, after encountering harassment, Williamson communicated this to the producer of The Rookie’s series. Regrettably, her complaint didn’t get forwarded to HR, leaving it unrecorded instead.
In response to the issue at hand, Entertainment One’s main studio announced that they and ABC have begun an external investigation. Later on, EW published a report indicating that this investigation didn’t seem to support the claims made against Williamson. The statement released said, “The individuals accused in Ms. Williamson’s accusations did not act illegally or engage in conduct unsuitable for the workplace.
It appears that Williamson expressed discontent over the results of the investigation, as evidenced by a subsequent Instagram post she made on September 18, 2019, expressing her dissatisfaction. Since then, she has not posted anything further on Instagram, and her latest acting credit remains from the 2020 movie “Still Here.
