Why Deadpool & Wolverine Didn’t Have More Fantastic Four Cameos

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and film buff, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when it comes to the near-miss of seeing some classic Fantastic Four characters grace our screens alongside Deadpool and Wolverine. The idea of Chris Evans’ Human Torch, fresh from his brief stint in the 2015 Fant4stic debacle, joining forces with Deadpool was tantalizingly close to becoming a reality.

In recent years, the movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is renowned for its abundance of guest appearances and serves as a comeback for characters like Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, and Jennifer Garner’s Elektra Natchios. Interestingly, Ryan Reynolds has disclosed that several other Fantastic Four characters from the 2015 movie, even those from the film known as “Fant4stic”, almost made cameo appearances in the Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

In a recent chat, Reynolds revealed that the characters from Fantastic Four had been considered for a cameo appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine. However, due to the impact Chris Evans’ Human Torch might have on the storyline, they were not included in the final lineup.

Reynolds explained to Collider, “Indeed, that was a component of it. However, don’t expect something similar with Chris Evans, given his previous performance and the excitement he brings along.”

Furthermore, Reynolds, who was not only a co-writer and producer of the film, attributed budget limitations as the primary cause. “Just wanted to clarify, and additionally, we were conscious of the financial aspect,” he elucidated, emphasizing that Deadpool & Wolverine was intended to be an R-rated production. “We aimed to create the movie, understanding it would carry an R rating,” he continued, acknowledging that they didn’t have unlimited resources at their disposal. “Given this, we felt it was our duty to deliver a return on their investment. Hence, I never want to work with a budget that I don’t feel confident I can repay. As we added more characters and effects, the financial commitment grew, pushing us closer to a point of no return.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reminisce about my experience with the film Fant4stic, directed by Josh Trank. It boasted a talented cast, including Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, and Toby Kebbell as Victor Von Doom. The movie was intended to revive the franchise, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations, receiving numerous Razzie Awards for its critical and commercial flops. Fast forward a few years, Disney has now taken over Fox. In the present day, we’re eagerly awaiting the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
