As a die-hard fan of the original 28 Days Later, I must say that seeing Cillian Murphy‘s potential return as Jim in 28 Years Later has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up with this franchise, it feels like coming home to see familiar faces and a world that still holds its chilling grip.
28 Years Later’s debut trailer is out now, and fans are guessing that Cillian Murphy might reappear in the sequel. In its initial footage, a thin, zombie-like figure is shown, with some viewers noticing resemblances to Cillian Murphy, especially given his role in Oppenheimer. This assumption could be plausible, considering director Danny Boyle’s past statements about the film.
28 Years Later trailer and Cillian Murphy’s ‘cameo’
28 Years Later’s trailer offers little in the way of revelations, primarily featuring stars Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It portrays a world still grappling with the aftermath of the zombie epidemic that occurred in the original story.
In the last scene of the trailer, a creature that looks strikingly like Cillian Murphy – who previously starred in 28 Days Later and is set to appear in 28 Years Later – can be seen standing up as a zombie. This suggests a strong possibility that this undead character could actually be portrayed by the Irish actor himself.
Why 28 Years Later will see Cillian Murphy’s return as Jim
In response to a question about Cillian Murphy reprising his role for 28 Years Later 2, Sony’s Tom Rothman indicated that Murphy would indeed be back, but not in the way fans might expect. He further explained that this return would add depth and complexity to the sequel.
It’s evident that Rothman is hinting at an unexpected twist for Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim. The revelation of Jim becoming a zombie would undoubtedly catch viewers off guard.
If “28 Years Later” has cast Cillian Murphy, his career has significantly progressed since his role in the 2002 horror film. This suggests that the production might aim to capitalize on his popularity. As Rothman mentioned that Murphy’s character develops more in the sequel, there’s a chance we could see Murphy reprising his role as Jim, who gradually contracts the zombie virus throughout the movie.
Although Murphy’s gaunt physique in this story might not fully reveal his backstory, there’s still much we haven’t learned about the sequel. However, considering the ominous tagline “time didn’t heal anything,” it seems plausible that Murphy’s return as a zombie could be an intriguing twist in the character’s reemergence.
