As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’ve been buzzing with excitement about the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.” Recently, whispers and rumors have stirred up quite a storm, hinting at Marvel Studios possibly re-casting the iconic role of Black Panther, left vacant by the unparalleled talent of Chadwick Boseman. Some speculations even propose that new actors might step into the mantle of T’Challa in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions. John David Washington has been one name frequently tossed around in these discussions. However, to quell the rumors swirling around, the producer of Black Panther 3 has recently cleared the air on this ongoing speculation.
Here’s all you need to know about why fans believe Black Panther would be recast.
Is Marvel recasting Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther in Avengers: Doomsday?
It’s important to note that Marvel has not officially announced plans to recast Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther in either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Nevertheless, whispers and speculation surrounding T’Challa’s potential recasting have sparked among fans recently.
In January 2025, a well-known source known as MyTimeToShineHello reportedly stated on X (previously Twitter) that Marvel Studios was looking for light-skinned Black actors to play the new T’Challa character. Their statement read, “Marvel has been meeting with light-skinned Black actors for the role of the new T’Challa.” Additionally, they shared some potential candidates rumored at the time, including John David Washington, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Aaron Pierre.
According to some sources, it’s been suggested that the latest Black Panther might make an appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, which is slated for release in theaters on May 1, 2026. Yet, Marvel Studios has yet to verify these reports.
Earlier, during an interview with ComicBook, Black Panther 3 producer Nate Moore, who left Marvel Studios in December 2024, refuted the rumors about Chadwick Boseman’s role being recast as T’Challa.
He explained that the rumors aren’t true at all. While it’s not wise to rule out anything completely, we haven’t had many brainstorming sessions with director Ryan Coogler just yet, as he is still working on his movie “Sinners,” which will be released this year.
He noted, “We’ll delve into it by the end of this year. However, remember that not everything you find online is accurate, simply because we haven’t begun working on it yet.
His recent comments suggest that speculation about a recast for his role is still unsubstantiated at this time. Notably, Marvel Studios paid an emotional tribute to Boseman’s character in Black Panther 2 by passing on his legacy to Shuri, and furthermore, the film introduced us to T’Challa and Nakia’s child, Toussaint, at the end.
