Costco unionized workers authorize nationwide strike

Teamsters union members, who make up a significant portion of Costco’s workforce, have given their approval for a nationwide strike. Over 85% of the members voted in favor of this action, impacting more than 18,000 employees spread across the country. The decision comes as negotiations between the union and the retail giant have reached an impasse.

In a statement, Teamsters Warehouse Division Director Tom Erickson stated that the strike vote was a direct consequence of Costco’s excessive greed and disregard for the negotiation process. Although Costco claims to prioritize its workers above competitors, at this moment, it appears to be falling short of that commitment.

Under the current terms, our contract will come to an end on January 31st. The union is advocating for improved wages and benefits, citing Costco’s substantial financial achievements as evidence. Costco reported an impressive $254 billion in earnings and $7.4 billion in net profits. Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien unequivocally stated that the union’s workers won’t stand for being underestimated. In a statement, he warned Costco’s top executives, “You have less than two weeks to act fairly. If you don’t, don’t blame anyone but yourselves when our members decide to strike.” The union has been intensifying its actions with mock pickets taking place nationwide as they prepare for the potential of a widespread strike.
