Why Alyn of Hull shaves his head in House of the Dragon

As a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones universe and having recently binge-watched “House of the Dragon,” I cannot help but be intrigued by the complexities of the Velaryon brothers, Addam and Alyn. Having grown up watching the original series and reading the books, I’ve seen how family dynamics and illegitimacy have shaped the lives of many characters.

In the show “House of the Dragon,” many children are born out of wedlock. Addam and Alyn of Hull are two such examples, and it has been disclosed through an encounter with Rhaenys that Corlys Velaryon is their dad.)

Addam is determined to connect with his heritage, believing it may bring opportunities his way. Yet, he yearns for his father, Corlys, to acknowledge him, but so far, this has not happened. Instead, Corlys seems to favor their younger son, Alyn.

Alyn doesn’t want people knowing he’s a Velaryon in House of the Dragon

Starting Season 2, Alyn has been hiding his bald head at times. He reveals it at certain instances, but other times, he wears a wrap to conceal it. This tactic is intentional – a method for him to hide the regrowing hair.

I’ve worked in human resources for years, and I’ve seen it all – nepotism, favoritism, and bias in its many forms. It’s a complex issue that can be frustratingly hard to address. But from my experience, I believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to succeed based on merit, regardless of their background or connections.

I was surprised when I learned that Alyn wasn’t eager to take on the role of First Mate, feeling that others were better suited for the position. Yet, it appears that Lord Corlys is on the hunt for an heir, and it seems his focus has shifted towards my friend Alyn.

Alyn persists in shaving his head bare, opting against drawing attention through his distinctive hair color. In contrast, Addam suggested in a recent installment that Alyn should wear his unconventional hair hue with confidence. Had he been endowed with such locks himself, he would have done so proudly.

Things will change thanks to Seasmoke in House of the Dragon

Up until now, Addam has been frequently disregarded by his father. However, this situation is likely to be different soon. In fact, Seasmoke has chosen Addam from Hull as its new rider.

At the outset, the illegitimate brothers are introduced to Dragonstone for the first time. The absence of Rhaenys, who was previously believed to be the source of the brothers’ exclusion, makes this process smoother. In the novel, it was widely believed that Rhaenys’s animosity was responsible for keeping the illegitimate sons away from Dragonstone. Nevertheless, her treatment of Alyn revealed a more compassionate side. The real cause of her anger is Corlys, whom she has valid reasons to dislike. Nonetheless, people may continue to attribute the brothers’ long absence to Rhaenys, as it is easier to blame her than confront the true reason behind their exclusion.

After Seasmoke has made his decision and selected Addam, it’s now important for Addam to make the acquaintance of Rhaenyra. This encounter presents an opportunity for Corlys to take pride in his other son, and this first step toward legitimizing both of them could potentially strengthen Corlys’ position in his search for a suitable heir.
