Who was the woman in Daemon's vision in House of the Dragon? (And what does it mean?)

As a dedicated fan of “Game of Thrones” and now “House of the Dragon,” I have seen my fair share of shocking twists and turns. But the latest revelation about Daemon Targaryen’s relationship with his mother, Alyssa, in episode 5 left me utterly speechless.

In the captivating series “House of the Dragon,” Daemon Targaryen has experienced some unusual and intriguing visions thus far. The latest episode brought about an unexpected twist that left viewers in awe and unease. As Daemon indulged in a passionate moment with a woman boasting white locks, fans were taken aback to discover her true identity.

At the conclusion of the vision, it was revealed that Daemon had been secretly having an incestuous relationship with his mother, Alyssa Targaryen. Alyssa held the roles of sister and wife to Baelon Targaryen, as well as being the previous rider of Meleys. Tragically, when Daemon was only two years old, Alyssa gave birth to a third child who, along with her mother, passed away within a year following the birth.

I’ve always been intrigued by Daemon’s complicated relationship with his mother. Though she was never a part of his life, he yearns to imagine her as his biggest supporter. He longs for the belief that she would have been proud of him and encouraged his ambition to rule over Westeros.

Alyssa’s appearance is how Daemon views women in House of the Dragon

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: When it comes to Alyssa’s presence in the game, it’s not just about that shocking moment of twisted family ties. No, it reveals more about Daemon’s perspective on women. In his eyes, they’re reduced to being merely objects, valued only for one specific purpose. He doesn’t hold them capable of ruling or making decisions on their own.

I’ve noticed how he imagines a young Rhaenyra’s rule and it’s evident that he has reservations about her capability to reign. He voiced his concerns to Lord Simon Strong and others at Harenhal. As the monarch, he holds the title of king without needing the “Consort” suffix added to it. For him, the partnership between him and Rhaenyra is equal in rule.

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice how regal and commanding Alyssa looks. Deep down, I feel a strong conviction that my mother would have wanted me to rule instead of Viserys. I believe I would have made a better king.

In the actual scenario, Daemon’s behaviors continue to undermine Rhaenyra’s backing among the people. They refuse to be led by a despot and remain unwilling to rally behind “Team Black.” Daemon must alter his course or risk fulfilling Alys Rivers’ ominous prophecy: Daemon will meet his end at Harenhal.

As a gamer pondering over the story, I can’t help but question if those words carry deeper meanings. Is the Daemon’s encounter at Harenhal foreshadowing his demise? Could it be possible that he might come to terms with the fact that his beliefs have been misguided all along? And perhaps these visions are here to show him that disregarding the women in his life is a path he can no longer tread. Maybe, after Harenhal, we’ll witness a changed Daemon.

We can check the book for reference, but keep in mind that the television series isn’t strictly adhering to it. Bear in mind that the book was penned by the victors and may not present an unbiased or accurate portrayal of the incidents. The show could be preparing for a shift in Daemon’s character development.
