Who might (and might not) return for the new Netflix One Tree Hill series?

As a dedicated fan of One Tree Hill, I can hardly contain my excitement about the revival! The show was a huge part of my teen years and the dynamics between Lucas, Nathan, Peyton, Brooke, and their families were so relatable and intriguing.

Are you all excited about the possibility of revisiting the world of One Tree Hill once more? Given its enduring popularity, there are numerous talented actors who might be interested in returning for the revival of this cherished teen drama!

Beginning on the WB in 2003, One Tree Hill followed the narrative of half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty), who reunited after being apart for years and navigated the complexities of being both rivals and allies. Notable performances were given by Sophia Bush as Brooke Davis, Hillarie Burton as Peyton Sawyer, and Bethany Joy Lenz as Haley James among others

In its fourth season, the series shifted to The CW network. Starting with season 5, a five-year time leap was implemented, taking the characters from high school into adulthood. Throughout the show’s run, there were several cast changes before it concluded in 2012 after nine seasons and a total of 187 episodes

Over time, “One Tree Hill” has continued to be a fan favorite, available for streaming on both Netflix and Hulu. The main cast members, Chad Michael Murray, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy Lenz, have maintained their friendship so strongly that they even started a podcast together discussing the series. Finally, it seems that the long-awaited revival by fans is coming true, thanks to Netflix, as Bush and Burton announced the news on their Instagram posts

“Imagine if we could return home, and collaborate with exceptional artists to establish a platform for our friends to exhibit their skills? To claim our heritage, reassert our dominance, and pay tribute to our supporters? We’re ready! There’s only one Tree Hill, and you – the #OTHfam – have demonstrated that it’s not just a concept; it truly is a place where everything is improved and protected,” Burton expressed, confirming the news

The remarks could subtly allude to Mark Schwann, the show’s initial creator, who has faced accusations of sexual harassment since the series ended. According to TV Line, however, he will not contribute to this Netflix spin-off, with Becky Hartman Edwards serving as its lead writer instead

Who’s likely to return for the One Tree Hill revival?

As reported by Deadline, the series finds Peyton and Brooke back in Tree Hill, this time as parents of teenagers, navigating their daughters facing similar struggles they experienced before. Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton have confirmed their returns; however, there’s speculation about which other original cast members may return to the show

It appears that actress Danielle Harris may return to her role, portraying Rachel Gatina, a past adversary of Brooke. According to Deadline, Harris expresses her desire to reprise this character in the upcoming seasons. In Season 7, Rachel was left single and divorced; it will be intriguing to witness how her story has evolved since then

It seems virtually certain that Lenz will participate, given how difficult it is to imagine OTH without Haley, and the fact that she’s already friendly with Bush and Burton on their podcast. This increases the likelihood that James Lafferty might reprise his role as Nathan, making it enjoyable to watch this cherished couple navigate a fresh chapter in the town. Additionally, there’s optimism that Austin Nichols could return as Brooke’s husband, Julian, which would be delightful to see them managing their family and children

In season 7, Shantel VanSanten was introduced as Haley’s sister, Quinn. At present, she’s playing a leading role in FBI: Most Wanted, suggesting that her return to the original series may be limited, although a brief appearance is still possible. As for Robert Buckley reprising his role as Quinn’s husband, Clay, it’s uncertain whether he will appear, but if the character of Clay becomes more prominent in the show, it would help balance out Quinn’s absence

Additionally, there’s a chance that we might see some returning original cast members, such as Barbara Alyn Woods portraying Lucas’ mother, Deb, and possibly Antwon Tanner making an appearance as the character “Skills.”

Who likely won’t be back for the One Tree Hill revival

It appears with high probability that Chad Michael Murray will not reprise his role in the show. This isn’t surprising given that Murray and his ex-wife, Sarah Roemer (formerly Bush), had a brief marriage followed by accusations of infidelity. Since then, their relationship has been strained, which may lead to storylines suggesting that Peyton and Lucas could have divorced or that Lucas might be written off the show

A significant aspect of the plot could revolve around Haley and Nathan’s grown son, Jamie, who, by the end of the series, was pursuing a basketball career like his father. Unfortunately, the actor who portrayed him, Jackson Brundage, left acting in 2015. Therefore, they would either have to find a new actor for the role or choose not to include Jamie in the storyline, perhaps implying he’s busy with his NBA career

As a gaming enthusiast, I can tell you that it’s pretty rare to see goofy sports announcer Marvin “Mouth” McFadden or Brooke’s former assistant Millicent Huxtable back on screen these days. Lee Norris and Lisa Goldstein, the talented actors behind these characters, have decided to take a break from acting for quite some time now

The upcoming series seems to follow a pattern similar to the CW’s revival of 90210, featuring some familiar faces from the original One Tree Hill along with an emphasis on new characters. There’s even speculation that some former stars might make a comeback, which has fans excited about the prospect of another captivating drama reminiscent of the original show’s success

One Tree Hill seasons 1-9 are streaming on Hulu and Max.
