As a seasoned fan of detective dramas who’s seen more than a few serial killers come and go, let me tell you that Cross on Amazon Prime Video has truly outdone itself with its portrayal of the Sandman Serial Killer. The blend of fiction and reality is so seamless that I found myself questioning the line between the two at times!
The 2024 Prime Video series titled “Cross” has just wrapped up its inaugural season, with viewers anxiously anticipating the revelation of the Sandman Serial Killer’s identity. Based on the widely-acclaimed Alex Cross novel series by American author James Patterson, this show follows the protagonist, who is both a detective and forensic psychologist, as he untangles intricate mysteries and crime scenes.
Here’s everything we know about the Sandman Serial Killer from the 2024 series Cross.
Who is Cross’ Sandman serial killer and how is he connected to Maurice Freeman Jr.?
In Cross Season 1, the fictional character Maurice Freeman Jr., also known as the Sandman, is first introduced. This character has elements inspired by real-life serial killers, which are subtly incorporated into the series.
In a twist of events, character Ed Ramsey, famously known as “The Fanboy” (portrayed by Ryan Eggold), sets his sights on Emir Goodspeed as his initial victim. Goodspeed, a well-respected local activist, is discovered deceased in his vehicle, with an unusual incident of his long locks being shorn off. At first, the Metro PD assumes it’s a drug overdose, but Detective Alex Cross has his suspicions about foul play. As the investigation unfolds, Cross stumbles upon a scrapbook belonging to Ramsey, which includes dossiers of his victims alongside details about 11 serial killers that Ramsey admires, such as the Sandman.
Cross clarifies that Ramsey designed his victims to mirror particular serial killers’ traits. For instance, the contents of Emir Goodspeed’s stomach – grilled pork chops, mashed potatoes, and a chocolate cupcake – mirrored the last meal of the fictional Sandman, as depicted in the scrapbook before execution, according to Cross. He further adds that Ramsey tailored each victim to resemble a specific serial killer.
“Emir Goodspeed met a terrible fate, being killed by a notorious serial killer. However, this murderer preserved a collection documenting their crimes. This archive contains a chilling postmortem image of Emir and nine other victims. Each victim in this series was altered to resemble a serial killer.
The series references real-life killers like Aileen Wuornos and John Wayne Gacy, but it creates Maurice Freeman Jr., the Sandman, as an entirely fictional character. The show portrays him as a serial killer who “raped and killed 14 women” and was “executed in 2007 by lethal injection” (via The Direct). In reality, no such person exists.
In the early 1900s, there was indeed a notorious German serial killer known as the Sandman. Yet, it’s important to note that he bears no relationship to the fictional character Cross. The creators may have developed Freeman Jr. as a means to bypass potential legal and ethical complications when associating a murderer with Emir Goodspeed’s death. They crafted him in such a way that he appears authentic to the audience.
Cross Season 1 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
