In the initial installment of The Penguin, Oz discusses Rex Calabrese with Alberto Falcone prior to murdering him. He was a notorious figure in Gotham City and Oz’s cherished idol from his youth. Besides being a gangster, Rex was known for his kindness, often offering aid to his neighbors, particularly those residing in underprivileged neighborhoods.
In episode 7, we get our first glimpse of the gangster. During a flashback sequence, Francis requests that Oz’s sibling, Jack, pass a book to Rex. Later on, Jack, Benny, and a young version of Oz observe as Rex and his associates brutally assault a man. The situation takes a turn when Oz shouts out his name, but instead of acknowledging him, Rex engages with Jack. This interaction leaves Oz feeling envious, as he watches his role model favoring his brother over himself.

In time, Carmine gained more prominence, leading to Rex’s arrest and subsequent transformation into Leo Leone.
In Batman Eternal #20, it’s revealed that Rex’s secret is exposed when Penguin and Carmime are imprisoned together. Unable to escape, he instructs his daughter Selina, a small-time crook known as Catwoman, to carry on his criminal legacy in the underworld. Tragically, Rex succumbs to a heart attack and is given an honorable send-off in his community.
