Who is Manoke to Lord John Grey in the Outlander books?

As a seasoned Outlander fanatic who has traversed through time and space with Claire and Jamie, I must say that the introduction of Manoke in season 7, episode 11 was a delightful surprise. Having delved into the Lord John Grey series of books, I was already acquainted with this enigmatic character. However, I fear that his screen presence might remain as elusive as his physical one, much to the disappointment of us die-hard fans who crave every morsel of the rich Outlander universe.

In the eleventh episode of Outlander season 7, Lord John Grey brought up a character from the Outlander book series. Let’s delve into the identity of this person. Could we possibly encounter him in future episodes?

Caution: There are SPOILERS for Outlander season 7, episode 11 and the books in this post.

Following an intense evening filled with heartfelt affection, Claire inquired about Lord John Grey’s past and the women who had captured his heart. However, what transpired was John revealing a secret he had never disclosed before – his deep affection for a man called Manoke.

In that particular episode, we got a glimpse of a character named Manoke. He’s an Indian man who John occasionally encounters. They seem to have a warm relationship, appreciating each other’s company, but it appears unlikely that we’ll encounter Manoke in the series itself. However, he does make an appearance in the Outlander books.

Who is Manoke in the Outlander books?

In the “Outlander” book series, we first encounter Manoke when the storyline progresses after the events of “Voyager.” This is where Jamie reconnects with Lord John Grey following the closure of Ardsmuir and their subsequent meeting in Jamaica. Later on, Manoke appears in the books “An Echo in the Bone” and “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

In the tale titled “Lord John and the Custom of the Army“, our protagonist Lord John is dispatched to Quebec, Canada in the year 1759. Here, he encounters Manoke, an Indian scout who serves under the British forces. A quick bond forms between them, and they discover mutual affection for one another. During a 14-day fishing excursion that Manoke invites John to join, they deepen their relationship and eventually become lovers.

Through “An Echo in the Bone,” Manoke finds himself employed as a cook at a Virginia plantation. This is the tale he shares with Claire, both in the books and on screen. Their camaraderie flourishes, yet there’s no ownership between them. They merely cherish the precious moments they spend together.

Could we see Manoke in the Outlander TV series?

In the novel “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone,” Manoke is indeed mentioned. This occurs within a plotline centered around a character named John Cinnamon, who shares an intriguing narrative with William. Together, they embark on a journey to find Lord John Grey, whom John believes could be his father.

It’s possible that the storyline with John Grey and William could unfold. Although it’s packed with details, given that John Grey is receiving more screen time and William is on a journey to discover his identity following the revelation of his paternity, there’s a likelihood we’ll witness this narrative. Initially, William may feel envious of ‘John Cinnamon’ because of his connection to Lord John Grey. However, this dynamic changes drastically as it’s revealed that John Cinnamon isn’t biologically related to Lord John Grey at all.

It’s unlikely that we’ll encounter Manoke, given the limited size of his role and the abundance of content we need to cover in the remaining episodes. In fact, it seems doubtful we’ll delve into the Cinnamon storyline as well, truth be told.

Outlander airs on Fridays on STARZ.
