Who was Jonathan Brandis?
As a gamer who grew up in the ’90s, Jonathan Brandis was more than just a familiar face on my television screen; he was a childhood idol. From his early days as a child model to his memorable roles in shows like seaQuest DSV and movies like Ladybugs, he was a part of my formative years.
Born in Danbury, Connecticut, Jonathan Brandis was the only child of Mary and Gregory Brandis. Mary combined roles as both a school teacher and personal manager, while Gregory handled food distribution and firefighting duties.
At the tender age of two, Brandis made his debut in the modeling industry, serving as a young model for Buster Brown shoes. By the time he was four, he had already graced our television screens with commercial appearances. He concluded his education at the San Fernando Valley Professional School and graduated in 1993.
From 1995 to 1998, actor Jonathan Brandis dated actress and vocalist Tatyana Ali. In the summer of 1996, they were showcased in an article published by People magazine.
Career
At six years old, Jonathan Brandis landed the role of Kevin Buchanan on the daytime drama One Life to Live. After his family moved to Los Angeles when he was nine, he started sporadically appearing in shows like Blossom, L.A. Law, Who’s the Boss?, Murder, She Wrote, The Wonder Years, Full House, Webster, and Kate & Allie.
At age thirteen, Brandis secured his debut leading role as Bastian Bux in The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter. Later, he took on the character “Stuttering Bill” Denbrough in the 1990 TV miniseries of Stephen King’s It, an adaptation from the popular horror novel. Brandis’ performance in the miniseries earned him positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
When Jonathan Brandis was seventeen years old, he landed one of his most recognized roles: portraying the character of Lucas Wolenczak, a brilliant scientist, in the futuristic science fiction television series by Steven Spielberg titled seaQuest DSV.
In a short span, he starred as the main actor in two consecutive movies – playing Barry Gabrewski in Sidekicks and assuming the character of Matthew/Martha in Ladybugs. This role catapulted him to the status of a teen heartthrob.
At the height of his popularity, Jonathan Brandis received around 4,000 fan letters each week and was escorted by three security guards upon arriving at the set of seaQuest DSV because of the multitude of female admirers. He lent his voice to Mozenrath, a malevolent teenage sorcerer, on Disney’s animated series Aladdin.
After the termination of seaQuest DSV in 1996, Brandis featured in the television movie titled Her Last Chance. Subsequently, he acted in another television movie called Born Free: A New Adventure, which was shot in South Africa. Later on, he took up supporting roles in Outside Providence (1999) and Ride with the Devil (1999).
In the year 2000, he played a significant role in “Bad Girls from Valley High.” Unfortunately, due to complications with distribution, the movie didn’t hit the screens until 2005, which was two years after his demise. Additionally, Brandis made a small appearance in the film “Hart’s War” back in 2002.
Back in 2003, I was fortunate enough to land a role in the pilot for 111 Gramercy Park, but unfortunately, the network decided not to air it. My last on-screen performance was in the action drama Puerto Vallarta Squeeze, which was released posthumously in 2004.
Cause of Death
On November 11, 2003, at the tender age of 27, actor Jonathan Brandis tragically passed away in his Los Angeles apartment. He was later found unresponsive in a hallway, having suffered injuries from hanging. Despite medical efforts at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, he didn’t recover and passed away the following day. No suicide note was discovered.
Following his passing, his companions shared that he had been distressed due to struggles with his professional life. Additionally, they mentioned his discontent when his role in the 2002 film Hart’s War, which he believed would boost his career, turned out to be smaller than anticipated in the movie’s final cut. Brandis resorted to heavy drinking and voiced plans of suicide.
In the year 2021, it was noticed by Jonathan’s dad, Greg Brandis, that he might be exhibiting signs of bipolar disorder. During a conversation with People magazine, he admitted to this observation.
His demise wasn’t caused by the entertainment sector. Reflecting on it now, in his twenties, he exhibited symptoms of bipolar disorder. Here’s hoping that anyone struggling with similar issues finds the strength to seek help.
