As a gamer and someone with a deep interest in history, I was both captivated and horrified by the Hulu documentary “Cult Massacre: One Day at Jonestown.” The story of Jim Jones and the events leading up to the massacre on November 18, 1978, is one that continues to intrigue and shock people.
The Hulu documentary “Cult Massacre: One Day at Jonestown” tells the story of Jim Jones, the charismatic leader of a cult, and the tragic events that unfolded on November 18, 1978. During this day, Jones persuaded his followers to take their own lives in the wake of Congressman Leo Ryan’s murder by Jonestown guards. It is believed that over 900 people perished in the Jonestown massacre, while approximately 90 survived. Stephan Gandhi Jones, who was both a follower and Jones’ son, shared his insights about his father and the events at Jonestown in the documentary.
Based on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s account, Stephan Gandhi Jones went to Jonestown as a teenage student to assist his father in constructing the community. However, life for him was wretched under Jim Jones’ rule. In an interview with Penthouse Magazine, Gandhi Jones shared that whenever he attempted to challenge Jones, he would be publicly embarrassed. He recalled, “Yes, any time I tried to speak up in front of everyone, he made sure to belittle me, humiliate me.” Furthermore, he disclosed that individuals were confined to subterranean cells as a form of discipline.
On November 18, 1978, as Congressman Leo Ryan visited Jonestown, Steven “Gandhi” Jones and the basketball team departed for Georgetown to participate in a tournament. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch detailed that Gandhi Jones declined to return to the commune and lived through the tragic massacre. He described his response to the event as self-medicating with drugs and engaging in physical activity. In his own words, Gandhi Jones expressed, “I channeled my anger towards Dad and his followers instead of confronting my own emotions.”
What did Jim Jones’ son Stephan Gandhi Jones reveal in the documentary?
Tragic Events at Jonestown: A Survivor’s Tale of Jim Jones
I’ve always called Stephan Gandhi Jones’ father “crazy,” but it turns out that much of his erratic behavior went unnoticed by others. He shocked me when he admitted, “My dad was just as crazy as anyone can be, and many of his quirks remained hidden for years.”
The film includes interviews with various survivors, among them a former congressman’s aide. You can stream the documentary “Cult Massacre: One Day at Jonestown” on Hulu.
