Who is Hanno’s Father? Maximus or Lucius Verus?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of immersion into the world of cinema, I must say that Gladiator II has delivered a riveting sequel, one that beautifully weaves together the threads of its predecessor while introducing fresh perspectives and intriguing characters. The revelation of Hanno as Lucius Verus, son of Lucilla and Maximus Decimus Meridius, is a plot twist that I didn’t see coming, but once revealed, it makes perfect sense in the grand scheme of things.

Who is Hanno’s Father? Maximus or Lucius Verus?

Is Lucius Maximus’ son in Gladiator 2?

In the sequel to Gladiator, it’s unveiled that the character Hanno is actually Lucius Verus, the offspring of Lucilla (portrayed by Connie Nielsen) from the original film. An interesting twist in Gladiator 2 is that Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), whom we knew as his mother’s lover, turns out to be Lucius Verus’ true father.

As I stepped onto the silver screen for the first time in the epic saga, Gladiator, they called me Lucius. Some thought I was just the son of a man with the same name, but there were whispers about my complex origins. The original movie hinted at a romantic past between Lucilla and Maximus, yet never confirmed it. But when the sequel unfolded, it brought the truth to light: I was born from that secret love.

The film suggests, through its characters, that Lucilla’s husband had little interest in women and that she had romantic involvements outside their marriage. Following the deaths of Maximus and Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix), Lucilla understood that Rome was no longer a secure place for her only male heir, who was the sole male descendant of Marcus Aurelius.

In the ensuing years, her son developed a deep-seated resentment towards her and Rome due to this perceived abandonment. After his wife perished during the war with Rome, that resentment metamorphosed into raw hatred. Upon their first encounter in the Colosseum, Lucilla identifies her son because he displays similar behavioral traits as Maximus.

Later on, she approaches him to discuss if he is truly her son, hoping to confirm this. At first, Lucius refuses her attempts and asks her to depart when she reveals his genuine heritage. Although the love for Rome passed down from both families may have momentarily faded, it never completely disappeared. In the crucial scenes, he dons his father’s armor and wields his father’s sword, transforming into the hero Rome desperately requires.
