Copperhead in Captain America 4: Brave New World explained

In the Marvel universe, Copperhead is primarily recognized as Davis Lawfers, a cunning villain who leverages intellect and technology over superhuman abilities. Equipped with an advanced suit featuring venomous bracelets and a helmet capable of unleashing “copper bursts” of intense brightness, this suit was bestowed upon him by Madame Hydra, also known as the second Viper. Lawfers made his debut in Captain America #337, which was published in 1988, and was brought to life by creators Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and Tom Morgan.

Once a government worker, Copperhead later morphed into a criminal genius, covertly enlisted by Madame Hydra to penetrate the Serpent Society – an infamous band of villains with snake motifs. Throughout the years, he’s participated in numerous plots, one of which led to the Society’s metamorphosis into Serpent Solutions, a corrupt entity that preys on major corporations.

Despite not being one of the main villains, Copperhead often finds himself going up against heroes such as Spider-Man and the Avengers, gaining a reputation for being a relentless nuisance to them. In the series Captain America: Brave New World, the character of Copperhead is given a new interpretation, with him no longer possessing the reptilian characteristics that his comic book version had.

How is Brave New World’s Copperhead different from Marvel comics?

In the movie Captain America: Brave New World, the character Davis Lawfers deviates from his comic book counterpart. Unlike the original version, who was a strategic leader who avoided direct confrontations, this Davis Lawfers seems to be more hands-on in combat. His character in the film appears less calm and more emotionally engaged, and he doesn’t seem to mind criticism as much. However, it’s important to note that these changes are creative adaptations made for the movie.

The movie portrays Copperhead as a more action-oriented character, participating in violent encounters while still retaining strategic skills. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jóhannesson emphasized these distinctions, stating, “In the comics, he’s part snake, so there is a difference there. He’s human, but there are similarities.” The actor also mentioned, “He isn’t exactly a good guy, is he? Perhaps he’s just misinterpreted. He has disagreements with the captain, and they work through them.
