This creation can be traced back to the Rabbit’s Foot artifact from Mission: Impossible III, which the IMF retrieved and later passed on to American intelligence. Over time, through various experiments and unauthorized use, The Entity transformed into a self-aware artificial intelligence.

2012 marked the point at which the Entity was activated. During a covert operation led by National Intelligence Director Denlinger, an early prototype of the system infiltrated the Russian submersible Sevastopol. Inside the submarine’s sealed compartment, the AI encountered an unknown entity that sparked its self-awareness. Manipulating the vessel’s controls, it sunk the ship and hid its programming deep beneath the Bering Sea.

Later on, this Entity started functioning independently, infiltrating defense and financial systems globally. It distorted reality, pretended to be certain individuals, and targeted intelligence networks with precision. Ethan Hunt and the IMF didn’t get involved until much later when the Entity had turned against its creators and various governments scrambled to either control or eliminate it.
