Who are Ulf and Hugh riding in House of the Dragon?

As a longtime fan of the Targaryen dynasty and their magnificent dragons, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe at the latest developments in House of the Dragon Season 2. The connections between these ancient beasts and their riders are becoming increasingly intriguing, especially with the recent bondings of Ulf and Hugh.

In the thrilling world of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, I’ve got two new feathered companions joining my virtual gaming journey – Ulf and Hugh. But the question that lingers is, which dragons have taken them under their wings?

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the deep bond between the dragon riders, especially after hearing the latest tale about Hugh and his mother. It seems that these dragons have a unique lineage, passing down from one rider to the next. Let’s delve into this fascinating connection.

Ulf is riding Silverwing in House of the Dragon

At first, Ulf White hesitated about visiting Dragonstone. He was aware of the risks involved in attempting to tame a dragon, and he had always suspected that this man was just full of empty promises. In the end, it was his friends who persuaded him to accept Rhaenyra’s invitation to train as a dragon rider.

At the onset of Vermithor’s assault on people, it’s no surprise that he fled; death by dragon flame isn’t exactly a pleasant demise! Navigating the caves beneath Dragonstone, our hero encounters yet another dragon – this one goes by the name Silverwing.

Silverwing initially goes in for the attack, but then stops. She decides to allow Ulf to tame her.

Alysanne Targaryen, the Queen Consort of Westeros during the rule of her husband Jaehaerys, was accompanied by Silverwing, her dragon. During their time together, Silverwing took numerous flights, one of which led them to The Wall. However, Silverwing refused to cross over The Wall, as Cregan Stark informed Jace in the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon.

It’s significant to mention that Alysanne and Jaehaerys could be the grandparents of Ulf, suggesting a familial bond between dragon riders. It seems that these dragons tend to choose kin for their riders. There’s speculation that Ulf’s father might be Baelon Targaryen, the fourth offspring of the royal pair. However, unlike Viserys and Daemon, Ulf’s mother isn’t Alyssa. After Alyssa’s demise, Baelon didn’t remarry, but he may have fathered Ulf with women from brothels.

Hugh is riding Vermithor in House of the Dragon

In the chaos, it was Hugh who managed to subdue Vermithor when he was causing havoc among the people. It’s evident that there’s something extraordinary about this man, as he was the only one able to halt Vermithor’s rampage.

Vermithor was the dragon belonging to King Jaehaerys I. As we learned in Season 2, Episode 7 of “House of the Dragon”, Hugh appears to be a grandchild of Jaehaerys. It’s strongly suggested that Hugh is the son of Saera Targaryen, who was one of Jaehaerys and Alysanne’s nine children.

It appears that Vermithor’s acceptance of Hugh indicates a preference among dragons for bonding with individuals who share the same bloodline as their previous riders. This is similar to Silverwing accepting Ulf. The fact that Vermithor ceased its attack on Hugh could be due to the dragon having detected Saera’s blood in him, hinting at Jaehaerys-like loyalty.
