The Last of Us Season 2’s WLF villains, explained

In the opening episode of Season 2, Joel and Ellie encounter a significant danger when Abby is introduced as a prominent antagonist. Abby, alongside Owen, pave the way for the introduction of the primary adversaries in the second part of the narrative. It’s revealed that they belong to the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), a powerful paramilitary group stationed in Seattle.

The game doesn’t delve into the origins of the WLF initially, but it is revealed that they started out as adversaries against FEDRA. As the Cordyceps pandemic swept through Seattle, citizens began to resent FEDRA’s tyrannical rule. In response, Emma and Jason Patterson founded the WLF as a rebellious group. They eventually succeeded in ousting the FEDRA forces stationed within the Seattle Quarantine Zone.

In simpler terms, Jeffrey Wright portrays Isaac Dixon, who is presently heading the organization. Previously, he had given voice to the character of Dixon in video games as well. Notable figures within the WLF include Abby Anderson, Owen Moore, Mel, Noah Harris, Manny Alvarez, and others who were once part of the Fireflies.

In the storyline of The Last of Us, Abby is driven by a desire for retribution as Joel was responsible for the death of her Firefly father, whom she sought to avenge. She carries out this vengeance in the second episode, brutally taking Joel’s life with Ellie bearing witness. Overwhelmed by grief, Ellie swears to take revenge against Abby and bring about her demise. The ensuing episodes will delve into Ellie’s struggle to cope with this devastating loss.
