Who are the five husbands Geillis has killed in Outlander?

As a devoted Outlander enthusiast who has traversed the pages of Diana Gabaldon’s novels and eagerly awaited each new episode, I find myself intrigued by this little inconsistency in season 7’s storyline. It seems that the writers may have slipped up or perhaps intentionally left certain details unspoken for us to unravel.

In the trailer for Outlander’s seventh season, episode 10, Roger hints to Buck that Geillis may have killed five husbands. However, in the actual episode, he suggests that she will reach this number. This has sparked discussions about who these five husbands could possibly be.

In the TV series, we’ve seen Geillis accused of killing three husbands. However, it’s revealed in the books that she’s responsible for additional murders. Is this an oversight by the show or are there details about Geillis and her actions beyond what we’ve seen on screen that Roger has uncovered through his research?

The three husbands Geillis killed in Outlander

In the television show, Geillis Duncan is known to have murdered three husbands, though there may be more unaccounted for. The first one she married served as a blood sacrifice for her passage through the stones, under the name of Gillian Edgars in 1968.

In the past, she had two more husbands, one of whom was Arthur Duncan. She was carrying Douglas McKenzie’s child at the time and felt compelled to eliminate her spouse in order to wed Douglas, as his wife had just passed away. Unfortunately, these plans never materialized.

Instead, Geillis found herself in Jamaica, where she wed Mr. Abernathy. Indeed, she bears responsibility for his demise, though I’m not certain if it was explicitly mentioned; however, the implication was clear enough. In her past, Geillis has a pattern of marrying men for their titles, wealth, and estates, only to discard them when they no longer serve her purposes.

How many husband did Geillis have in the Outlander books?

In my mind, it’s just the three husbands that stand out from the pages, but come 1739, there were a few more significant connections she forged.

Among them was an elderly gentleman who resided in the charred remnants of a cottage. His lifeless body was discovered, while the woman chose to relocate to Cranesmuir. It’s been ascertained that this is Geillis, and it seems plausible that she may have been responsible for his death.

In addition to Dr. McEwan, another time traveler, they developed a close relationship, though its outcome remains undisclosed. It’s plausible that Geillis was responsible for his demise, yet it’s equally possible that he continued helping others, or met an end unrelated to Geillis.

It seems to me that Roger’s statement suggesting Geillis will murder at least five husbands might be an oversight in the scriptwriting of the Outlander TV series. However, it’s also possible he was being dramatic to convince Buck of Geillis’ danger.
