The First Installment of “Wicked” Has Been Unveiled: This film has been making waves with its unique tale of a woman sporting green skin who develops an unconventional connection with a student thirsty for recognition. Despite its impressive box office performance, what truly piques the interest of viewers is the movie’s stunning locations. So, where exactly was “Wicked” filmed, and why are its shooting spots so captivating?
Here is everything you need to know about the shooting locations of the fantasy adventure drama.
Where was Wicked: Part One filmed?
Principally, Wicked: Part One was predominantly shot in the United Kingdom. Sky Studios Elstree, situated nearby London, acted as the central filming site. Additionally, various other locations were utilized for filming, such as Elstree Studios, Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the village of Ivinghoe, Norfolk, and East Sussex (as reported by Time Out).
For the production of this movie, Sky Studios Elstree served as our main base with 12 soundstages accommodating the space needed. But due to the magnitude of the project, we required extra stages. Some sequences were even filmed at both Elstree Studios and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. In all, the film utilized a total of 17 soundstages and four expansive backlots to bring the magical world of Oz to life.
The team responsible for set construction erected the charming Munchkinland village in Ivinghoe, a town near Luton. They crafted vibrant houses and the famous Yellow Brick Road, resulting in breathtaking sights. To further embellish Munchkinland, they cultivated nine million tulips in Norfolk. The harmonious union of natural splendor and man-made structures truly made the village seem alive.
Among the standout scenes from the movie, there’s one where the haughty Glinda makes her entrance at Shiz University. Instead of walking, she glides into the waterway aboard a stunning pink sailboat. This spectacular scene was filmed at Seven Sisters Country Park, nestled within the South Downs National Park in East Sussex. The majestic cliffs of the South Downs provided an impressive backdrop for the Land of Oz, enhancing its overall grandeur.
Jon M. Chu, the director, along with Nathan Crowley, a renowned production designer (best known for Interstellar), prioritized real sets in their production. Many of these sets were towering up to 50 feet high and occupied the entire soundstage area. These colossal structures made it possible to film from all angles, thus minimizing the requirement for blue-screen effects. This approach lent a genuine and visually captivating feel to the movie.
Wicked: Part One is currently in theaters.
