Whenever I encounter Horse Guai, I always make sure to go through all his dialogues before proceeding. It’s not necessary for him to shift positions between chapters, but I prefer to play it safe and avoid any potential surprises.
Chapter 1 Location
In the first chapter, following your fight with the wolf demon Lingxuzi, proceed forward until you reach a small pond and some adversaries. To your left, you’ll discover a modest entryway. Enter it, interact with Ma Tianba who resides there, and you’ll also find a peaceful meditation area. This space will reward you with a Spark.
Chapter 2 Location
In the charming village of Sandgate, you’ll come across a gentle horse named Guai, tethered to a post. To enter, you have two options: go through the main entrance or circumvent to the right side for a stealthy entry via the side. Unfortunately, you can’t untie him from where he’s held in the pavilion within the tower.
Don’t worry, he will manage to escape and catch up with you later in the game. His main concern is your well-being above all else.
Chapter 3 Location
Ma Tianba is located inside a grand temple structure, positioned to your left as you approach Thunderclap Temple. Simply continue moving to your left upon entry, and you’ll encounter a large double staircase guarded by four adversaries who wield lightning. Ascend these stairs, enter the building, and then take the staircase on your right. At the summit, veer left, and you’ll come across Horse Guai. Interact with him until he repeats certain dialogue, after which you may proceed.
Chapter 4 Location
Progress through the game’s most challenging zone, battling your way to encounter the colossal Centipede Guai. Once the battle is won, move upward and to the right, continuing along the path until you stumble upon Ma Tianba, who unfortunately finds himself ensnared in a humongous cocoon. Free him, and you’ll have the chance for an extended conversation with him.
Chapter 5 Location
If you’ve come to cherish the company of your horse, I regretfully bring troubling news. Unfortunately, in our current location, he seems to have found himself in quite a predicament from which neither you nor he may be able to extricate him.
Progress through the level until you encounter Pingping, who will guide you to the Furnace Valley region below. Towards the valley’s bottom, just past the Valley Entrance Shrine, you’ll come across a stationary cart, similar to the bosses you’ve been battling in this area.
Ma Tianba resides within, but he’s far from well. His vital essence has been drained from his physical form, confined to the wagon. Keep urging the whip for the conversation to loop again, then it’s a matter of seeking vengeance for our comrade and setting him free.
Progress through the stage, battling and overcoming the Guardian of the Flaming Peaks. The confrontation is imminent; simply follow the wooden-arched path, then vanquish the boss that resides there. Continue slightly forward to locate the adversary you’re pursuing. Upon doing so, you will have the opportunity to liberate Horse Guai’s spirit. This act grants you the Dark Thunder metamorphosis, enabling you to assume a potent form of Horse Guai in combat.
