As a seasoned gamer with a decade-long journey under my belt, I’ve seen games come and go, some leaving lasting impacts while others fade into obscurity. The news of Ubisoft shutting down XDefiant has left me somewhat perplexed but not entirely surprised.
Many people are wondering why Ubisoft chose to close down their newly released game, XDefiant. The company initially introduced this free-to-play first-person shooter game back in 2021. After working on it for a year and generating interest through its beta versions on Twitch, it was officially launched this year, quickly garnering significant attention. Even though the game started off well, Ubisoft later decided to shut it down recently.
When will Ubisoft shut down XDefiant?
Ubisoft confirmed that Xdefiant’s servers will remain operational until June 2, 2025.
Starting right away, users can no longer download, register, or purchase items for the shooter game. The publisher plans to provide access to the third season’s content at a later time, which they refer to as the “near future.” (paraphrased from Polygon)
Currently, the game isn’t accessible for newcomers. Users who have recently purchased the $69.99 Ultimate Founder’s Pack or other in-app items will receive a refund to their accounts. Furthermore, any transactions made during the past month will be compensated to players as well. According to a letter from XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin, refunds should be processed within approximately 8 weeks.
Why is XDefiant being taken down by Ubisoft?
Ubisoft chose to close down XDefiant due to its failure to draw the necessary number of players for their long-term goals.
Ubisoft has recently shared a detailed announcement about the termination of their successful first-person shooter game. They mentioned that even though everyone involved put in a lot of effort and the game initially performed well, it failed to keep the audience they anticipated within the “competitive first-person shooter scene.
Due to the game falling short of attracting enough players as anticipated, they’ve chosen to discontinue funding for its development, eventually leading to its closure. In other words, “Since the game is not reaching the necessary outcomes to justify further substantial investment, we are announcing that it will be closed down.
