As a die-hard Rajinikanth fan with years of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but be in awe of the courage and vision shown by director Nelson Dilipkumar in making “Jailer.” The decision to make the superstar play his age was indeed a bold move, one that many naysayers from the Tamil film industry tried to dissuade. But as they say, every great masterpiece is born out of defiance and rebellion against the status quo.
Today, August 10th, is a significant day for Rajinikanth fans everywhere as his last blockbuster movie, Jailer, celebrates its first anniversary! Let’s revisit the moments when the film’s director shared the hurdles he encountered while scripting and shooting this cinematic masterpiece.
In an interview with Film Companion, he admitted that too many people from the Tamil film industry warned him against coloring Rajinikanth’s hair gray in Jailer. They asked the filmmaker to make the actor ‘do whatever he has done already’ if he wanted Jailer to work.
During our discussion, he expressed concerns about producing the film. He mentioned these reservations persisted even while they were filming it. He shared, “For the first time, I feel that I asked Rajinikanth to portray his actual age. Many people advised me against it, saying ‘Don’t make him play his age; let him continue with what he has already accomplished’.”
The director chose to trust his instincts, acknowledging that if things didn’t work out, he’d accept full responsibility. He also mentioned, “I didn’t want anyone else to cloud my judgment.”
For those unfamiliar, the movie titled “Jailer,” released in 2023, is an action-packed film directed by Nelson Dilipkumar with the main character portrayed by Rajinikanth.
In the film, the renowned actor portrays Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a former prison warden living peacefully with his loved ones which includes his police officer son. Notably, it has been disclosed that Yogi Babu has shared that the script for Jailer 2 is being penned by the director at present.
