When Keerthy Suresh was considered ‘unlucky’ by filmmakers after her film Idhu Enna Maayum tanked

In just a brief span, Keerthy Suresh has ascended to pan-Indian stardom, with her talent showcased across various regional films and an admiration from fans that stands out. However, due to her widespread recognition, there was once a period where she was labeled as ‘unfortunate’ in the film industry.

In a nutshell, her diva status was established following the underperformance of her first Tamil movie, Idhu Enna Maayum, and since then, her subsequent films in the Kollywood industry have also failed to achieve success.

Due to this, she gained the reputation of being an unlucky actress among numerous movie directors and producers. This tag left a deep impression on her, as evidenced by her decision to reject Nag Ashwin’s film Mahanati in 2017, which ultimately proved to be a critical juncture in her career and a massive box office success.

In an interview with Galatta India, Keerthy shared that when Nagi presented the story to her, she initially declined the project. Despite the producers’ enthusiasm about her portraying Savitri Amma, she was filled with apprehension. She worried, “What if I botch it up? What if people say I tarnished the legacy of such an iconic figure?” Her fear of failure overshadowed all other concerns.

Initially taken aback, Keerthy clarified that her initial refusal to accept the film was due to her deep-seated apprehension regarding being labeled ‘unlucky’.

Keerthy admitted that she initially hesitated due to concerns about fan reactions and doubts over how her character’s story would be portrayed. However, it was Nag Ashwin’s strong belief in her talent, more than what she believed in herself, that eventually won her over and gave her the confidence to move forward with the project.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the movie Mahanati turned out to be an immense success at the box office, and it continues to stand as one of her most impressive performances to date.

Currently, Keerthy’s film schedule is packed with upcoming projects such as Revolver Rita, Kannivedi, and a movie yet to be named where she will act alongside Ranbir Kapoor on screen.
