Are you wondering about the timeline for Norah O’Donnell departing from the CBS Evening News? The impending farewell of this long-standing anchor signifies the close of an epoch, as she leaves behind an impressive body of work in journalism and national broadcasts. As CBS prepares to welcome new anchors and a fresh format, there are many aspects to explore regarding this transition.
Let’s delve deeper into the specifics of O’Donnell leaving, the forthcoming changes in management, and future plans for CBS Evening News.
Here’s when Norah O’Donnell last night before leaving CBS Evening News is
Norah O’Donnell’s final night as anchor of CBS Evening News took place on January 23, 2025.
Initially scheduled for January 24th, I had to reschedule because CBS Sports decided to air the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tour event instead. This move would’ve made the broadcast exclusive to the West Coast, so we needed a new plan. Unfortunately, this change marked the end of my five-and-a-half-year stint as an anchor and signaled the conclusion of our time in Washington, D.C.
Last summer, the well-known host declared her intention to resign following the 2024 election. Since then, O’Donnell has moved into a senior correspondent position, specializing in high-profile interviews. She recently stepped down from her role, not long after covering Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20th.
Starting from July 15, 2019, Norah O’Donnell took over as the anchor for CBS Evening News. Prior to this role, she was a co-host on CBS This Morning and CBS’s primary White House correspondent. On January 27, 2025, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois will be taking over as co-anchors. Additionally, the program will return to New York City after spending five years in Washington D.C.
Beyond this, CBS News is set to implement wider alterations for the show, focusing on a format that offers more 60 Minutes material. The correspondent roles will be expanded, with Margaret Brennan taking charge of Washington-based reporting. Additionally, Lonnie Quinn will deliver regular weather updates. (As reported by Deadline)
60 Minutes’ executive producer Bill Owens has taken on additional duties overseeing CBS Evening News. Alongside anchor changes, CBS News experienced a reorganization of leadership in August 2024. Adrienne Roark was promoted to the role of president for editorial and newsgathering, replacing Ingrid Ciprián-Matthews in this position (as reported by Variety).
These adjustments are intended to improve the quality of storytelling and news coverage on all CBS News outlets, with Norah O’Donnell set to continue her valuable input on shows such as 60 Minutes.
