‘When I saw his performance, I went to Omkara…’: Jr NTR upon watching Saif Ali Khan as Bhaira in Devara

As a dedicated follower of the Indian cinema industry, I have had the pleasure of witnessing some truly exceptional performances over the years. Among these, one that stands out is Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Ishwar ‘Langda’ Tyagi in Omkara. This character, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Iago, left a lasting impression on me, and it seems Jr NTR feels the same way!

On September 27, 2024, Jr NTR is poised to cause a stir in cinemas everywhere as his long-awaited film, Devara: Part 1, hits theaters. In a recent chat with Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar called “Devara Ka Jigra,” the actor expressed nothing but admiration for Saif Ali Khan’s performance in his movie.

Reflecting on the film-watching experience, Jr NTR stated, “Saif Ali Khan’s character reminded me so much of Omkara! I was so thrilled watching him that the moment I saw the film and his performance, it felt like a flashback to Omkara. He truly embodied the role and was exceptional in it.

Additionally, the actor also elaborated on why the movie grew significantly during its scripting stage, attributing it to an abundance of intriguing characters involved in the production. Furthermore, the actor disclosed that as of now, they have only filmed a portion of the sequel’s scenes.

For those who may not be familiar, Omkara is a crime drama film produced by Bollywood in 2006. This movie was both written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and it was based on the Shakespearean tragedy “Othello.” The cast includes well-known actors like Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, and others in significant roles.

The movie set in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut portrays Saif as the character Ishwar ‘Langda’ Tyagi who was the adapted version of the original play’s character Iago, the main antagonist. The film was also the second installment of Bhardwaj’s trilogy of Shakespeare adaptations, which began with Maqbool in 2003 and concluded in 2014 with Shahid Kapoor’s Haider.

For the forthcoming film Devara: Part 1, directed by Koratala Siva, we have an action-packed saga unfolding on the coastline, dealing with the hardships of the sea. In this story, Jr NTR portrays a unique dual role as both father and son, exploring themes of fear and deceit. Alongside Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor will be making her Telugu acting debut, taking on the lead female role.
