When Does The Platform 2 Take Place? Timeline & Setting Explained

As a devoted fan who’s been eagerly awaiting the release of The Platform 2, I must say, the creators have truly outdone themselves with this intricate prequel/sequel narrative! Being privy to both timelines has added an exciting layer of complexity to the franchise that keeps me on my toes.

The sequel to “The Platform” has now been released on Netflix, sparking lively debates among fans of this highly praised series over the movie’s captivating plot. They are eager to learn more about the film’s backdrop and how it deviates from its predecessor. Intriguingly, where does “The Platform 2” unfold, and what makes its timeline so intriguing?

Here is everything you need to know about the setting of the film.

When is The Platform 2 set in the franchise’s timeline?

The Platform 2 takes place about a year before the first part.

In essence, Platform 2 serves as a prelude rather than a continuation of the film released in 2019, titled The Original Film. At the end of the first movie, it appeared that Goreng had perished, but the girl he nourished took on his role as a messenger to the Administration. This message ignited the other prisoners to revolt against the prison’s regulations. Moreover, tales about the jail’s savior were circulating, which seems to be none other than Goreng himself in this prequel narrative.

In the second part, it’s initially suggested that events continue from Goreng’s revolution in Part 1. But then, an unexpected turn occurs: Trimagasi is revealed to be alive, implying that this sequel actually happens before the first movie. In The Platform 2, the story unfolds a year prior to the initial installment, during which Trimagasi was serving a one-year sentence. Interestingly, in the first film, Goreng had to kill Trimagasi in self-defense after he tried to cannibalize him on a lower floor. The fact that Trimagasi existed shows that the inhabitants of the Vertical Self-Management Center initially aimed for a fair system. However, the strict prison rules eventually brought about its downfall.

Moreover, the prequel features cameos by various characters from the original series such as Baharat, who aided Goreng in communicating with the prison administrators in the initial movie. Also included is Imoguiri, the interviewer who speaks to Perempuan before she enters The Hole. Similarly, Miharu, who saved an imaginary daughter in Part 1, can be seen accompanying a child towards the prison following a game victory against other children. Lastly, the main character from Part 1 makes an appearance in the mid-credits scene of The Platform 2. It is suggested that he and Perempuan may have been acquainted previously and she has rejoined him after their demise.

The Platform 2 is streaming on Netflix.
