As a hardcore fan with over two decades of unyielding devotion to the Walking Dead Universe, the 2024 NYCC lineup was nothing short of exhilarating. The anticipation that built up during the panels for Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol and Dead City left me on the edge of my seat, my heart pounding like a drum in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
2024’s New York City Comic Con was a gaming paradise for me! AMC Networks didn’t disappoint, setting up engaging panels for two of their “Walking Dead” spin-offs that truly caught my attention – “Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol,” and the intriguingly titled “Dead City,” starring Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan).
In the first trailer, enthusiasts got an early look at Dead City’s second season, along with the announcement that it will air in the spring of 2025. Fans of this show, set amidst a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, are certainly excited about this development!
At the panel, Chris Jericho – a professional wrestler and musician – acted as moderator. Joining him were Scott M. Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, executive producers Morgan and Cohan, along with stars from the show. Additionally, returning cast members Gaius Charles, Željko Ivanek and season 2 newcomer Dascha Polanco attended the panel as well.
In the first season, Maggie and Negan joined forces to rescue Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim), who had been kidnapped by Ivanek, a previous associate of Negan’s from the Saviors. The city, once bustling with life, is now inhabited by hordes of undead and various inhabitants who have claimed the island. This new world presents a mix of anarchy, danger, breathtaking beauty, and sheer terror.
In season 2, Maggie and Negan will be at odds again, this time fighting for control over Manhattan. Previously, Maggie had deceived Negan and exchanged him for her son. Unbeknownst to her, “The Dama” (Lisa Emery) – the actual leader of one Manhattan group – had secretly talked with her son and even took his pinky toe as a warning of her capabilities. The Dama wants Negan to manage part of her crew to conquer the island, with the assurance that if he refuses, she can effortlessly take more from Hershel’s territory.
In the preview, Maggie inquires, “Why do you intend to return [to Manhattan] following all that transpired,” though it’s not immediately clear she’s addressing Negan. However, as the scene unfolds, we find Negan slipping back into his old habits, donning a leather jacket and wielding a revamped Lucille – hinting at potential complications in this storyline.
In the spring of 2025, The Walking Dead: Dead City will be back on both AMC and AMC+ for its thrilling second season.
At the New York Comic Con panel, Gimple announced exciting updates about The Walking Dead Universe. He revealed that plans are underway for new spinoffs and further expansions within this universe.
