When Chiyaan Vikram refused to be part of Kamal Haasan’s planned Ponniyin Selvan television series

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m always excited to delve into the captivating world of cinema, and today, as we celebrate Chiyaan Vikram’s 59th birthday, let me share an intriguing tidbit about this remarkable actor. Contrary to the success he now enjoys with the Ponniyin Selvan film franchise, did you know that Vikram initially declined the project when Kamal Haasan proposed adapting it into a television series? Yes, you read that correctly! Despite its ultimate triumph on the big screen, this iconic role almost took a different path.

Before Mani Ratnam took up Ponniyin Selvan, the rights for its film adaptation had initially been acquired by veteran actor MGR, who announced it way back in 1959. Following his death in 1987, those rights were subsequently passed down to the legendary Kamal Haasan.

Originally, Kamal Haasan intended to make a two-part movie called Ponniyin Selvan with Rajinikanth, Sathyaraj, and Prabhu, but this plan fell through. Later, he offered the lead role in a TV version of the story to Chiyaan Vikram instead.

Instead, Vikram declined the proposition. In an interview with News18 at a later date, he disclosed that Kamal Hassan had invited him to his office and expressed interest in producing Ponniyin Selvan for television. He mentioned, “Kamal sir suggested that I should be part of this project. He allowed me to choose any role I desired.

Vikram continued by saying, “The following day, I reached out to him and shared that I would be patiently waiting for its release in theaters. It’s quite peculiar how I’ve always been considered for Ponniyin Selvan, but it’s a comforting notion.

Indeed, Vikram assumed the role of leading both segments in the Ponniyin Selvan movie series, under the direction of Mani Ratnam. This cinematic saga additionally showcased Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ravi Mohan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, Prabhu, R Sarathkumar, and several others.

In terms of his career, Vikram recently released the Tamil action-thriller titled “Veera Dheera Sooran”. This movie was well-received at the box office. His performance as a tough screen character garnered positive feedback not just from fans but also from critics.
