What's Rollins' new job on Law & Order: SVU Season 26? (Is she getting a spinoff?)

As a long-time fan of the gritty, gripping world of Law and Order: SVU, I must say, the return of Amanda Rollins has me absolutely thrilled! It feels like coming home again to see Kelli Giddish reprise her role as one of my favorite characters on the show.

It has been revealed that we now understand how Amanda Rollins will reappear on Law and Order: SVU, and she won’t be by herself! Is it possible that Rollins’ new position could pave the way for a spin-off?

It seems like Kelli Giddish’s departure from Law and Order: SVU in late 2022 marked the apparent conclusion of her character, Amanda Rollins. There were rumors that Giddish didn’t wish to leave, but it was NBC pushing for a change, with the actress acknowledging that the decision wasn’t entirely hers. Her exit was orchestrated with Rollins and Carisi getting married and Rollins accepting a position as a college professor.

In the season finale crossover with “Law and Order: Organized Crime,” it was revealed that Rollins had appeared and was pregnant with Carisi’s child. Later in Season 25, Rollins reappeared. During a subsequent episode, she left her college job and expressed a longing for police work again, although Benson questioned her decision to rejoin SVU.

In the October 24th episode titled “Divide and Conquer”, we can expect to see Rollins back in action. This time, she’s been promoted to a sergeant and is working with the NYPD’s Intelligence Unit. The SVU team will be collaborating with her on a case that involves foreigners who commit crimes in the city, then return to their home countries. Accompanying Rollins will be her new partner, Detective Vince Corgan, played by John Clarence Stewart.

Speaking to TV Insider, Giddish shared the new job and how it affects Rollins.

Rollins loves her new job. She says it’s like getting to eavesdrop on the whole world. And I feel like she’s really happy, and it’s fun to play that version of Rollins.

It’s a bold new direction for Rollins. Could it lead to more?

Could Rollins be getting her own Law and Order spinoff?

In this role, it appears that Rollins is ideally suited, as suggested by Giddish. It turns out that this fresh assignment pushes Rollins beyond her usual boundaries, as she frequently collaborates with different departments; however, her bond with Carisi remains robust.

As a dedicated Chicago PD fan, I’m well-versed in the operations of an Intelligence Unit, tackling some pretty risky cases. Right now, it’s just Rollins and Corgan handling these, but it sure feels like we could be setting the stage for a fresh spinoff featuring Rollins alone. When asked about this possibility, Giddish playfully replied, “Well, who wouldn’t want that?

It seems that the new season will present a refreshed Rollins, characterized by positivity and freedom from the emotional weight SVU typically carries. Her promotion to sergeant is commendable, allowing her to work alongside Benson as peers. Furthermore, this change offers an opportunity for viewers to witness Rollins leading her own team and tackling challenging cases with her distinctive determination.

It’s wonderful to have Rollins reappear on Law and Order: SVU, even if it doesn’t result in a spinoff. Her return, accompanied by a fresh role and a path for redemption after her previous departure, adds depth to the character.

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit season 26 premieres Thursday Oct. 3 at 9/8c on NBC.
