What We Do in the Shadows Has Been Around for Too Long, Taika Waititi Believes

As a seasoned gamer with an unquenchable thirst for the supernatural and a soft spot for comedic brilliance, I must admit that the journey of What We Do in the Shadows has been a rollercoaster ride. While the movie was a delightful surprise, the series took it to another level, immersing us into the lives of these eccentric vampires with an infectious blend of humor and fantasy.

Taika Waititi isn’t strictly convinced that six seasons were essential for What We Do in the Shadows.

In 2014, Taika Waititi teamed up with Jemaine Clement as co-directors for the New Zealand comedy titled “What We Do in the Shadows.” Besides these two, actors like Jonathan Brugh and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer also graced the film with their performances, while Waititi and Clement themselves portrayed roles within it.

Initially, What We Do in the Shadows was transformed into a mockumentary television show that debuted on FX in 2019. This series is masterminded by Clement, with Waititi acting as an executive producer. Notably, Waititi has directed multiple episodes for the series and has made appearances in various episodes. The sixth and final season of this show will wrap up later this month.

What did Taika Waititi say about What We Do in the Shadows?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi expressed that he hadn’t anticipated the series would span over six seasons and shared his perspective on why it seems to have run “much longer” than necessary now.

He remarked, ‘It lasted much longer than necessary, but I’m still proud of it.’ During filming, he told Jemaine, ‘This seems to be an idea that could fit within five minutes, yet we’re extending it into a movie.’ To his surprise, they ended up producing six seasons based on the same concept.

Waititi commended the ensemble of the What We Do in the Shadows TV show, featuring Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Persistent, Matt Berry as Laszlo Cravensworth, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja, Harvey Guillén as Guillermo de la Cruz, and Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson.

As a gamer, I’d say one of my best moments was skipping the fang-wearing part while others had to don them, which I found quite amusing. To top it off, these folks were hilarious, if not more so than our group.

Tonight, on December 10, 2024, you’ll see the second-to-last episode of What We Do in the Shadows Season 6. The season finale will follow on December 16, 2024.
