As a lifestyle expert with a deep-rooted connection to Indian culture and traditions, I must say that Allu Arjun’s decision to pay homage to Goddess Gangamma in his Pushpa 2 character is nothing short of inspiring. The Tirupati Gangamma Jatara festival showcases not just the richness of our cultural heritage but also the deep-seated respect we have for our deities and their stories.

Previously, the first glimpse of Allu Arjun’s character from Pushpa 2: The Rule was revealed, leaving many speechless online. In the poster, the actor donned an androgynous style, wearing a pattu saree with blue body paint and accessorized with nose pins, earrings, bangles, necklaces, and a garland of lemons. Although some fans were perplexed by this unusual appearance, it was in fact a tribute to the deity Gangamma Thalli.

Story of Goddess Gangamma, the inspiration behind Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 look

Each year, during the first and second weeks of May, the lively festival known as Tirupati Gangamma Jatara occurs. Devotees from all over India flock to Tirupati to pay homage to Goddess Gangamma at this time. According to Hindu legend, she is believed to be Venkateshwara Balaji’s sister and safeguards the area from any potential danger.

The Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple in Tirupati hosts the annual Gangamma Jatara, which is attended by devoted worshippers. At the onset of the festivities, the priests carry out a special ritual to kick off the celebrations.

After that, drummers march through the ancient town, striking tambourines to mark the start of the festival. Striking these tambourines not only signals the beginning but also advises locals to stay within the town until the festivities conclude.

How long do people celebrate Tirupati Gangamma Jatara?

The celebration spans a full week, starting at midnight with the commemoration known as Chatimpu. This kick-off event serves as an official signal for the festivities and is celebrated through the rhythmic playing of musical instruments such as dappus.

Day by day, I immerse myself in the sacred rituals of Bhairagi Vesham. On this special occasion, I adorn my body with a pure, white paste called Namam Kommy, and drape myself in a garland fashioned from Rella Kaya. In my hands, I clutch neem leaves, adding more around my waist for good measure. After paying homage to the divine Goddess, I leave behind offerings of neem leaves and Rella Kaya garlands at the temple. This daily procession is a testament to my unwavering devotion.

On the following day, the Banda Vesham ceremony unfolds with participants applying kumkum paste and tying ribbons onto their heads. Afterwards, they participate in the Thoti Vesham ritual which includes smearing their bodies with charcoal and adorning neem garlands around their necks.

For Dora Vesham, followers apply sandalwood paste with garlands made of neem leaves and lemons. The following day initiates Mathangi Vesham and represents Gangamma comforting the chief’s wife after overcoming Palegadu.

The following day sees the celebration of Sunnapu Kundalu, during which devotees apply white paste adorned with charcoal dots on their bodies and walk around the temple while carrying pots. This event culminates in the Gangamma Jatara festival.

Today, devotees present sarees and pongallu at Gangamma temples. At midnight, a clay statue is placed and a special ritual called Chempa Tholagimpu takes place to conclude the festival. Additionally, the clay figure is shared among worshippers for its healing properties.

It’s thought that the Gangamma Jatara festival may play a significant role in Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2. This way, the creators can emphasize Pushpa Raj’s origins since his character is from Andhra Pradesh. Concurrently, the movie is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on December 5.
