As a follower, I’ve noticed the “hyperpigmentation” meme buzzing around on TikTok lately, and it seems many others are curious about its origins. This popular meme can actually be traced back several years. Across different social media platforms, countless videos featuring the “Hyperpigmentation” meme have been shared, garnering millions of views and likes. Lately, it’s really picked up steam on TikTok.
Here is everything TikTok users need to know about the “Hyperpigmentation” meme.
Here’s what the ‘hyperpigmentation’ meme on TikTok means
The “Hyperpigmentation” meme began with a video from 2019, filmed by Sonia Tiebi. In this video, Tiebi and her daughter have a conversation about a rather rough sketch that the daughter has made of Tiebi. Tiebi asks her daughter to show her the drawing after posing for it for around 10 minutes, and the daughter seems hesitant but ultimately reveals it to Tiebi.
After a brief moment, Tiebi inquires if the figure depicted in the sketch is meant to be herself. As soon as the girl accidentally lets the drawing fall, Tiebi hurries over to comfort her while attempting to hide her amusement, saying, “Oh, no, no, it’s wonderful! Absolutely wonderful. I’ve never looked better. By the way, where were you when they took the senior photos?
When the girl expresses her opinion that it doesn’t look good, Tiebi responds enthusiastically by saying it’s fantastic. Later on, she inquires with a well-known phrase, “Is that some sort of hyperpigmentation?” or simply “What’s going on there, is that hyperpigmentation?
Originally, it’s unclear who first posted the video, but later on, ViralHog obtained the rights to it. In their post, ViralHog states that the event depicted in the video occurred on May 4, 2019, in Omaha, Nebraska.
Since June of that year, the video has been posted on the ViralHog channel. About a month later, it’s said that Tiebi shared it on her now-known-as X (previously Twitter) account. As I mentioned earlier, it has gained significant attention recently on TikTok, with numerous users incorporating the meme into their own posts.
