The long-awaited second season of “Severance” has been released, continuing the narrative from the previous installment while hinting at increased risks for Mark Scout and his team. Alongside this, new characters are introduced to their world. Yet, the show has sparked a flurry of questions among fans, one of which revolves around the significance of terms ‘Inner’ and ‘Outer,’ initially presented in Season 1 of “Severance.
So what does an ‘Innie’ and ‘Outie’ mean in Severance? Here are the two concepts explored.
Severance’s Innie and Outie worker explained
As a gamer diving into the immersive world of Severance, I find myself undergoing an extraordinary in-game surgery that splits my character’s consciousness into two separate entities: Innie and Outie. It’s like leveling up my gaming persona to a whole new dimension!
At Lumon, an employee’s professional identity is referred to as ‘Innie’. While in this role, an Innie’s experiences and interactions are limited to the office environment. This means that any actions or conversations that occur during work hours remain confined within the workplace. An Innie does not retain any recollections of their personal life or activities outside of work. Their workday commences upon entering the elevator for the office, and concludes upon leaving the premises. Once they step off the property, they transition into an ‘Outie’ state, during which all memories from their Innie persona are erased and replaced with those of their personal life.
An ‘Outie’ refers to an individual’s personal identity that exists beyond their work life at Lumon. This is essentially who they truly are and the version of themselves who elected for the ‘Severance’ process. Importantly, the Outie has no recollection of events within the workplace.
As a gamer, I’d say: A brain implant allows me to switch between my Inner and Outer selves seamlessly. During a quick, painless procedure while I was awake, this device was placed within my mind. When it’s time for work at Lumon, the implant activates, transforming me into an Inner self. Once I clock out and step away from the office, it deactivates, returning me to my Outer state.
Through the Severance process, it’s crucial that employees maintain a clear division between their Inner and Outer personalities to prevent sensitive or risky Lumon information from being disclosed publicly.
