What If…? Season 3 Gets Harsh Comments From X-Men ’97 Showrunner

As a gamer who has been following Marvel’s animated series for years, I must confess that I was quite excited about What If…? Season 3. However, after hearing Beau DeMayo’s strong disapproval, I decided to give it a try. And let me tell you, it was a rollercoaster ride, but not in a good way.

Being a fan of X-Men ’97, I had high hopes for this season. But alas! It felt like watching a fanfic with no substance, and the dialogue was so flat that it could have been written by a bot. The premises were weird, to say the least, and I found myself asking, “What if this show was better?”

It’s no secret that DeMayo had a falling out with Marvel, but his criticism of What If…? Season 3 seems spot-on. The season seemed to lose its direction when AC Bradley stepped back, and Chauncey took over. I don’t know about you, but I prefer my animated series with substance rather than fanfic-like stories.

On a lighter note, I guess we can all agree that what if Disney+ had listened to DeMayo and made the show better? Maybe then we wouldn’t have to wonder why this season was so mediocre!

If What If…? had concluded following the release of Season 3 Episode 8 on Disney+, it would have ended with a variety of reactions from both critics and general audiences. While many critics have praised the final season, the overall response from viewers has been somewhat polarized, ranging from positive to negative feedback. Recently, Beau DeMayo, who was previously the head writer for X-Men ’97, shared his thoughts on this new season as well.

Beau DeMayo disapproves of What If…? Season 3 on X

Over the weekend, Beau DeMayo shared his firm opinions about Season 3 of What If…? via his account on platform X (previously known as Twitter). His post read, “Wow, just wow for Season 3 of #whatif.

DeMayo later described the season as “average.” Another user wondered about Beau DeMayo’s criticism towards What If…? Season 3, since they were familiar with him and his past interactions with Marvel. In response, DeMayo explained that he found the season lacking in depth and felt it resembled fan fiction. He further stated that the dialogue was uninteresting and predictable, and some of the storylines were bizarre.

In response to a user’s comment that Season 3 wasn’t as strong as before, DeMayo stated that in Season 3, “AC Bradley handed over the reins to Chauncey.

Significantly, by March 2024, What If…? Season 3 earned a commendable 75% appreciation from critics but a less satisfying 46% approval from viewers. Previously, Marvel let go of DeMayo prior to the debut of X-Men ’97.
