Netflix’s hit series You concludes its run after seven years, wrapping up the story of obsessive serial killer Joe Goldberg in a powerful finale. The last episode presents one more confrontation for Goldberg, leaving viewers curious about his ultimate fate and whether he faced justice for his crimes. Fans are now left wondering what became of Goldberg in the end.
Here’s everything to know about Joe Goldberg’s final moments in the finale of You Season 5.
Does Joe Goldberg die or get caught in You Season 5’s ending?
Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) ends up getting caught and sent to prison at the end of You Season 5.
Following a fire in his bookstore’s basement that came perilously close to claiming his life, Joe managed to escape and attempted to surreptitiously cross the Canadian border. Simultaneously, his wife Kate formed an alliance with previous victims Nadia and Marienne. Together, these three women revealed to Louise Flannery, also known as Brontë, the true nature of Joe’s monstrous personality. They disclosed that it was indeed Joe who had committed the murder of Guinevere Beck, a writing tutor, all the way back in Season 1. Convinced of his guilt, Brontë resolved to bring Joe to justice and made the decision to accept his proposal, with this pursuit being her sole reason for doing so.
Initially, Brontë considered the prospect of a joyful relationship with Joe, but she quickly regained her focus. One fateful night when they broke into a cabin together, she pointed a gun at him and pressed for the truth about her friend Beck’s fate. This line of questioning sparked a fierce fight between them, culminating in Joe shooting Brontë. Miraculously, out in the wilderness, Brontë was able to dial 911, enabling the police to track them down.
Instead of waiting for them to catch up, Joe implored Brontë to take his life. “Take my life. I am deserving. You know you have the capacity. Please, admit it, you are more like me than you think. It is you who should end my life, Brontë. This is how our story concludes,” he begged.
Instead, Brontë firmly declined, expressing she’d prefer him to suffer solitude in prison rather than grant a quick end. In a desperate last try, Joe lunged at her forcefully. However, Brontë overpowered him and shot him in the lower body. The series concludes with Joe experiencing a grueling trial, leading to his conviction for all crimes and subsequent imprisonment.
