What Happened to Valeria Márquez? Mexican Beauty Influencer Passes Away

As a devoted follower, it’s heartbreaking to say that I mourn the loss of Valeria Márquez, a beloved Mexican beauty influencer who left us too soon at just 23 years old on May 14, 2025. The tragic news was confirmed when she live-streamed on TikTok, capturing an unthinkable event – a gunman taking her life inside her salon in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Here’s what we know so far about Valeria Márquez’s death.

Valeria Márquez passes away at 23, claims report

23-year-old Mexican social media personality, Valeria Márquez (who specialized in beauty influencing), was fatally shot during a live broadcast on TikTok at a hair salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, on May 14, 2025. The Jalisco state prosecutor’s office reported that Márquez was confronted by an individual within the salon who identified her as Valeria and proceeded to draw a firearm, firing at her. After shooting Márquez, the suspect and an accomplice escaped on a motorbike (as per The New York Times).

Investigators are looking into the murder as a potential case of gender-based homicide. A representative from the prosecutor’s office, Denis Rodríguez, declared, “They didn’t have a personal bond… He was merely her killer.” In Mexico, femicide is defined as the slaughter of women due to their gender, frequently involving aspects such as public humiliation, mistreatment, or association with the offender.

Marquez boasted over 200,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram. During her live broadcast, she was spotted clutching a plush pig toy while showing signs of unease before the incident. Just seconds earlier, she uttered “They’re coming,” and nodded affirmatively when asked “Hey, Vale?” before silencing the stream. Following the gunshot, another individual entered the scene and halted the video transmission (as reported by Reuters).

That afternoon, she casually commented about a person coming to the hair salon bearing an extravagant present while she was absent, and she had no desire to encounter them. It was approximately 6:30 in the evening local time when authorities arrived at the location and verified her passing.

The tragic act of violence has brought focus to Mexico’s persistent issue with gender-related killings. As reported by the United Nations, Mexico documented more than 50,000 female murders spanning from 2001 to 2024, with conviction percentages rarely exceeding five percent. In 2023, femicide rates were estimated at approximately 1.3 per every 100,000 women, positioning Mexico among the regions in Latin America with the highest rates of such violence. The ongoing investigation continues.
